Our Family Snorkel Trip in Cozumel in March - Part 3

in #ocd3 days ago

I just went through all the photos and videos I have of this trip, and it's quite amazing to be honest. So I'm back to share another few of them with you.
If you've missed my earlier two posts about our snorkeling trip in Cozumel, then you can find them here:

But let's dive right in! (pun intended)

This friendly little fish is a Smooth Trunkfish. It's like he's posing for a photo making a duck face haha.

More of Colombia Reef

Speaking of diving, here's my sister showing off her freediving skills. However, my son wasn't doing anything she did, as you will see later.

We enjoyed the reefs at Palancar and Colombia very much, especially Colombia has a huge variety of sea creatures. There were all kinds of different fish and as seen in the last post, even some beautiful nurse sharks.

Also among the fishes in the sea was this beauty. Known as a Black Triggerfish. Not sure what triggered him, but he was nicely posing for the photo. A few little clownfish (I think?) still looking for Nemo swimming around him. Not sure why they call him Black either, because he seems more red/purple to me, but hey, maybe this marine biologist was color blind?

Then this little guy made his appearance. To be honest, I didn't even see him until I checked the footage...I was actually going for the yellow and white fish, which is a Haemulon, or grunt fish. I had to look all of these up though. I'm not that good. But the squid also looks pretty cool huh?

I DO know the name of this little guy, as we have thousands of them swimming close to the shores here. So whenever we go to the beach, there are always quite a few of them around.
It's a trumpet fish! Whatever that reddish thing hiding in the reef is though, I have no idea. Maybe I don't want to know!

Now this one is just too cute! It did give me a little scare though, because I mistakenly thought it was a pufferfish. Although we saw those on our first trip, and they are quite harmless unless provoked, or stood on. Which is nearly impossible because they're nowhere near the surface usually.
This little guy, as I later discovered is a porcupinefish, or porcupine puffer fish. It's very cute though! Just don't pet them...

As my last image, I want to show the coral here in the reef. It's just beautiful, but it also makes me a little sad, because the reefs are slowly dying. And coral is the first to go, unfortunately.
People still haven't learned. What we can do and which makes a huge difference, is not go swimming with suntan lotion on. It kills the reefs! But also oils, like coconut butter etc. which people often think is better, shouldn't be used. The oil leaves a layer on the surface, and then the sun has issues penetrating the water. In turn, things like seagrass (essential for turtles!) can't grow properly. Keep that in mind the next time you go snorkeling or even just swimming.

A Video with some beautiful Fish

I want to close this post off with a video. It shows quite a few beautiful fish in and around the reef. I actually slowed the footage down a little, because they were really fast trying to get away from the crowd. This way, they're a little better visible.

The video was posted on my YouTube channel.
All videos and photos are mine.

I hope you've enjoyed this underwater tour.

Please stay tuned for more posts of our snorkel trip.
