Ok, I admit one thing: I am a critic. Yes, it's true, and I am also very uptight about word choices. The term frontend is one of those words that really grinds my nerves.
here's an example:
@hivetrending, I'm not picking on you, this was the first result that came up in google.
Let me explain why I never use the word 'frontend' when discussing Hive
Welcome to my brain.....................
Ok, let's first start with the word 'front'. Ok, this means the front of something. Now let's look at the word 'end'. Ok, this means the end of something. So when you put 'front' + 'end' together, you get 'frontend' which means nothing! Basically, this is putting two opposite words together and then expecting the general public to magically know what this means! It's not going to happen.
A lot of what I see on Hive is developer-speak. I know a little about programming and taught myself to hand code websites. I have built a chatbot and some other bots on Twitter, so I understand some basic coding. I know what the word 'frontend' means but if we are trying to welcome new people into Hive, we have to think about what words we are using.
I never use the word 'frontend'. To most people it doesn't mean anything.
When I am talking to someone about Hive, I first try to ascertain their level of knowledge. If they are a complete blockchain noob, i avoid all words that they will not understand: decentralization, web 3.0, dApp, etc. I avoid them altogether. I use their language.
I describe Hive as an operating system, and the various dapps and websites as 'sites'. Using words that people understand is the first step to communication.
Think about the last time you came into contact with a word that you didn't understand. Then add two more words that you don't understand. You check out. Data shows us that humans start to ignore something if there are too many words used that they don't know. I do this also. It's like if it takes so much effort to figure out the meaning, I tend to dismiss it.
Do you know why Carl Sagan was so popular?
It wasn't because he was super smart (he was very smart tho). No, it was because he could communicate about arcane scientific topics in a way that everyone could understand him. He was a communicator and he knew how to simplify everything down so that everyone, even people who weren't science-oriented could get it.
This is why I never use the word 'frontend' when I talk about Hive. I use either the word 'site' or 'website' when talking about hive to an absolute beginner.
There are lots of words that bother me...PUD is one. Also the word 'moist' really upsets me as well. Other terms that drive me nuts: 'foodie'. And by the way, just so you know, I am bothered by food posts, so don't tag me in your food tweets. Thanks. oh yeah, and one other thing: stop tagging the hive whales in all your tweets. they are not retweeting you. Instead, tag these twitter accounts: @hiveblogshare, @hivelift and @hivetrending. Tag me if yours is not food posts. 🍳
Another thing that has been bugging the crap out of me is when people just make huge lists of accounts and tag people on twitter. Did you know that you can upload an image and tag people in the image? That way, it hides all the account names but tags them in a neatly packaged image.....
ok, hive on!
hivepeople
It’s a post for Hive developers. I hope they know what front end means 😉.
hahahahhahahahahahah yes but everyone use the word 'frontend'! I see it everywhere, in videos, in discussions, it's all over the place.
Gotcha!
just having a bout of OCD tonight....
and when i began to think of the word 'frontend' it made my brain boil over, i started laughing out loud,
Interface is worse
