Saying No To Nuclear in Wales

in #nuclear7 years ago (edited)

With past historic events involving Nuclear Power such as Fukushima, 3 Mile Island and Chernobyl it’s no wonder some people in Wales are against recent involvement of Horizon Nuclear Energy investing in another site here.

Another site, yes you read that right.

There is already existing disused site that was closed in 2015 after both its reactors were shut down and decommissioned as they were no longer fit for purpose and could cost too much to repair. The original site was operational in 1971. A rather large and dangerous construction and business that failed to provide a viable industry for less than half a century, comparable to the endless sun, wind and biomass energy we are more than capable of producing in Wales.

The new site is planned to be built next to the decommissioned site taking up to 300hectres of the vital natural landscape of Camaes Bay in Anglesey. In the above image the old site is North and the new site is South.

Undoubtedly this will have an impact on the environment, landscape and economy around the site. Why they cannot wait until the old site is useable instead of destroying more habitat for an energy source that has a limited life before a new site will need to be found.

Recently North Wales has been proposed as a potential site were nuclear waste could be dumped at least 200metres below ground and the land owners would be paid excess of £3 millionpounds, which would have a detrimental effect not only to our towns, but our house prices and this effect would last for many generations.

Something that is a quick fix now should not be allowed when it will hinder future generations in the area and sadly you can guarantee that it will only be social housing built here.

This is a cove not far from the site, I was walking once on a rainy day here and saw a seal in the sea, and was mesmerised. Such a vital rural cove unaffected yet by mass tourism or human impact.

Renewable Energy mainly in the form of wind tubines is currently making up 6.9 TWH of our energy and just one of the newest turbines built off North Wales is capable of producing more energy then the whole first windfarm plant.

The remaining 39 Twh of power is from fossil fuels.

Although we still have a long way to go before we can phase out fossil fuels Nuclear cannot be an option as we have far more space still available for turbines and with a lack of investment in the renewables market which can only get better in time.. we hope.

Wales is country renowed for its lush landscape, diverse habitats, wildlife and clean fresh water we must not destroy this before we explore other options first.

What astounds me is that 100 years ago, Nikola Tesla worked out and built a huge prototype device to harness electrical energy from the ether (can't remember if cosmic radiation). Something to do with the electrical differential between air and ground (or something like that). I believe JP Morgan was backing the project up until the point where he realised that once everybody could acquire free energy, then there was no profit in it and so stopped the funding. When Tesla died a broke man, the FBI confiscated all his research.

We have been purposefully taxed and robbed to high heaven and kept in the dark while destroying the Earth with our greed.

It's no surprise that more beautiful countryside will be consigned to concrete and pollution.

Thank you for posting about this issue @pumpkinsandcats the world needs to wake up to new possibilities.

Bye for now,

Robster.

Its astounding what technology is ignored for the financial gain of so few. It's like we have been mislead into a land of false sense of security in which we need an abundance of extra energy.

Same with plastic, I can only imagine what happened to the activists against plastic when it was invented.

Thank you @eggmeister

As always, it's about money, power & control......... some things will never change :(

Thankfully there are a few of us who know the score,...... I just hope we don't dwindle away.

You're welcome :)

Robster

We won't! The youth are more aware then ever, the internet will never die and because of this the truth will come out one day. I have faith in it ha ha

That's a big thumbs up!

I agree that other options should be pursued. This is frightening. There is so much damage done to the world through nuclear power leaks already.

It's such a shame, how as beings on the planet how we can explore this before any other viable alternative is a joke

Renewable and sustainable energy is the way out for providing our energy needs. I think it's high time we start decommissioning nuclear plants and stopping nuclear related activity. As you say we have abundant renewable energy on the planet.

Couldn't agree more, use what we can renewable first then onto devastating alternatives if there is no other option

Nuclear power is more efficient than fossil fuel generators, but even so I wholeheartedly agree that as a species we should pursue renewable energy as it is more sustainable and cleaner. It is in fact the only way forward for our civilization to thrive for the coming centuries.

Nuclear being an energy source and only an energy source is briliant, however I disagree with its the only way.

Sadly if renewable energy had the same funding and support as nuclear I am confident we could provide enough energy.

There is so much kinetic energy from trains, road, cycles etc that is unharnessed at the moment, with the right technology we could create, and store a variety of different materials for energy consumption.

You are totally right about the kinetic energy. I disapprove of nuclear power at all. The risks of playing with radioactive material, which stays radioactive for thousands of years are simply too high. Also, more we stockpile, higher risk of nuclear proliferation there is, in case, some horrific global conflict happened. People don't think straight in crisis situations.

You know what's also a problem? That you buy a property somewhere, where in the next couple years government might want to store nuclear waste...and then the monitoring of leaking radioactivity doesn't really always happen. Something like that has happened in Germany - https://euobserver.com/beyond-brussels/132085

You raise very valid points. In the event of humanitarian crisis nuclear would become a weapon of blackmail.

These sites where nuclear is stored can easily be found or attacked by drone and other methods.

I'm sure its all tied in with the Sauds somewhere with "Arms Trade Deal"

I actually did consider moving to Anglesey, but the Nuke reactor really put me off, plus the RAF base there....
Seems like Wales is becoming a new re-construction ground...
And dumping ground...... aparently the Hinkley Point Nuclear plant wants to dump a load of Radio active waste in the Bristol channel too...
Where will it end... and as we saw at Fukushima, its all well and good until something goes wrong.

It's a very sad state of affairs, and sadly the view amongst many in North Wales is it brings jobs... Given to the most deprived areas so this hellish idea can be deemed as a fantastic investment.

Fed useful information and therefore the masses follow.

It is a beautiful part of the country, so rich in heritage = D I hope you find somewhere as equally as nice as Anglesey.

Great post and positive thread of comments :) keep doing what your doing..spread awareness and find the best path to fixing the problems mankind has created.. together we can fix everything

Exactly! If only we spent more time thinking! They have our brains consumed for a reason. Years ago we had thought and made unbelievable leaps now we are so out of tune of whats around us and never have time to truely study earths forms.

Wow, I really hope Wales can push back against this nuclear threat. It's insane that this is still considered as a viable energy option, it's so archaic. I've yet to do the research myself but have heard that private investment in green energy is on the up, so fingers crossed green alternatives will soon start to appeal to the rich few, as well as the sane masses!!

I hope so too. Keep an eye out in your area as they are looking UK wide like Hinkley for example.

Everything has a danger of some sort . Nuclear seems to have a few more dangers than most . Nuclear has immense amounts of power and potential . It is almost one of those things that needs to be experimented with in space instead of here . But then we have the danger of the satellite degrading and causing a worse situation from orbital spin throwing the debris all over the world . We all hear about these types of devices from tesla . Until they find a way to distribute the energy from them to you . And charge for it . It will never see the light of day until we have another person Tesla brain come along.

I think the most paramount point you raised is charge for it. Free Energy would cause a massive issue with the markets!
