I remember when going to radiation safety school, the instructors showed us a video of one of the first fire fighters peering down into hole in the reactor, then turning towards the camera and then grabbing at his stomach. You could already see the Beta burns on his face and the reason he was grabbing his stomach is the Beta burns had already killed the cells in stomach lining. He was already a dead man walking. I guess it took 12 hours or so for his heart to mercifully stop beating. How you could have a fire department near a Nuclear reactor and not tell them in advance that first on scene of a melt down are automatically dead.
