A female mallard skims smoothly along the surface of the lake. Mallards feed on water plants as well as insects and crustaceans. They forage on the surface of water by dabbling, which is to submerge head and neck into the water, as opposed to diving. This is why they are also called dabbling ducks. This mallard in the photo is enjoying the best moment in the afternoon at leisure on the lake, with warm sunshine and plenty of food.
