I am a football freak and I love watching good football matches. And guess what? At the time of writing, the Netherlands is playing against Germany at the Johann Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, and the match can be seen on NPO Star, that is, on NPO 3. There is only a slight problem... the live stream is only available if you are located in the Netherlands. So, what can you do if you want to access a live stream on NPO Start, but are located outside the Netherlands?
It isn't necessarily so obvious that the problem is that you are outside the Netherlands. Why is that? As I tried to watch the match between the Netherlands and Germany on NPO Start, all I could see was a black screen and no content loading. If you don't know better, then you are tempted to believe that there is a technical error on the website or some other bug causing the black screen to appear. The reality, however, is that you are hindered from watching the content because you are located outside the Netherlands.
The black screen and the content not loading on NPO is a result of you being outside the Netherlands.
What can you do to solve this problem and to watch NPO abroad? I guess you are in a hurry like, because you want to watch a football match live on NPO or some other brilliant content!
It is easy to watch NPO abroad if you follow these steps!
Are you in a hurry? This is what you should do!
- You need to purchase a VPN subscription to the VPN provider Surfshark. This is a big (and cheap) VPN provider with servers in more than 100 countries. It is extremely good for unblocking streaming services and TV networks, meaning that you can use it to watch NPO Start outside the Netherlands, BBC iPlayer outside the United Kingdom, ZDF outside Germany, and also gain access to Netflix content in several countries, and much, much more!
Use the link above to get a special Surfshark discount! If you don't like the service after you have bought a subscription, cancel everything and ask for a full refund. The refund policy is valid for 30 days.
Download the VPN application of Surfshark and install it on your telephone, tablet, computer, smart TV, or other device. You can use one subscription on all those devices simultaneously, so install it wherever you can. It is also possible to install Surfshark as an extension in your browser, meaning that it will only impact your browser and not the entire system (if you use a normal VPN application, all your traffic is sent through the VPN tunnel, while only your browser traffic is sent through the VPN tunnel if you use a browser extension).
Launch the application and connect to a server in the Netherlands. It normally takes a few seconds to connect to a server, and once the connection has been made, the application will tell you it is connected, and that you have a Dutch IP address.
It is often useful to restart your browser window or your NPO application. Now it is time to visit the NPO Start website (or the NPO application). You can now access the live streams and the programs available at the service. And guess what, I am now able to watch the live stream of the Netherlands playing against Germany in a Nations League match! Unfortunately, the result is 2-2, which is bad, cause I really want the Netherlands to win the match.
That's it! This is how I am able to watch NPO Start abroad, and this is exactly what you can do to watch Dutch TV outside the Netherlands.

Are you reading this article outside the European Union? If you have a Netflix subscription, then you should try to visit the Netflix website after you connect to a server in the Netherlands. You will suddenly be able to watch all the content available on Netflix in the Netherlands. You can also connect to servers in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States, Mexico, and several others to see what content is available on Netflix in those countries that are unavailable at your current location.
A few words about NPO.
The Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (NPO) is the Dutch public broadcasting organization. It is responsible for overseeing and coordinating public television and radio services in the Netherlands. It was created in 1926, with the founding of the first public radio service by religious and ideological groups. Over the decades, different broadcasters representing various religious, political, and cultural pillars emerged. As a result, the channel represents the variety of the country and not one special "group" or "religious belief."
In 1969, public television was consolidated under the Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS), and later in 2000, the NPO was formed to coordinate all public broadcasting services. NPO operates multiple TV and radio channels, including NPO 1, NPO 2, and NPO 3, catering to a diverse audience with a focus on news, culture, education, and entertainment. It is funded primarily through government subsidies and advertising revenue. The NPO is known for its independence and commitment to public service broadcasting.
Have you ever heard about the TV program or concept "Farmer Wants Wife"? Did you know that this is based on the Dutch concept and TV program titled "Boer Zoekt Vrouw"? It launched in 2004, and has since then spread to the rest of the world. This isn't the only Dutch TV concept that has spread worldwide. One of the most famous of all TV programs coming from the Netherlands is "The Voice."
