Join me on a final winter hike of 2021! - What a gorgeous Christmas it has been

in #norway4 years ago (edited)

For too many years, the idea of a white Christmas has been nothing but a distant dream. Despite living in Norway, a country I'm sure most of you will associate with snow during the winter, most Christmas eves in living memory have been wet, gray, and dark.

Of course, this is mainly due to my upbringing on the southwest coast. In a city as far away from northern Norway as it is from Paris. Being one of the cities in the world with the highest number of rainy days, it is quite uncommon to see snow for more than 2 weeks consecutively before the rain washes it away.

It is thus such a pleasant feeling to experience true winter at our family's cabin during the season. I guess I can thank covid for how this has become the new normal, as my family is now choosing to spend the time here rather than in the city (where we might be otherwise in order to spend time with other parts of the family).

But just because there is snow, doesn't mean that the weather will make being outside attractive. And boy has this year's weather been amazing!

Shiva and I looking back at the landscape we've just left behind having climbed some additional 300 meters in altitude.

Although the amount of snow is insufficient to allow for proper cross-country skiing, it still paints the landscape in a way that makes winter-hiking magical! Just look at these views from our 4-hour long hike today. Just stunning!

It's on days like this where I feel the most privileged to live in a country where most people are able to own their own vacation home or two. To then be able to just decide whenever you want to go for a walk in nature and straight into beautiful landscapes like this.

Close to the mountain top was a frozen lake bathing in the sun.

Interestingly, getting further up did not mean more snow. Typically, there will be more snow at higher altitudes as a greater amount of what might have otherwise come down as rain further down would then come as snow due to lower temperatures. However, with it has been mostly dry and cold so far this winter, that was not the case.

At the summit, the winds were getting quite harsh (it had been completely calm the whole time on our way up), but a mandatory picture was still needed! (Despite it being biting cold)

As always though, the view at the summit was worthwhile! We had been walking in the shades for quite a while and then arriving at the top and seeing the sun-covered snowy landscape all around was spectacular.

Finding some shelter shortly thereafter, we could enjoy some gingerbread and hot chocolate that we had brought with us in respect of traditions!

I can also confirm that the Christmas treats we had made and enjoyed tasted even better 1200 meters above sea level!

The sun setting down over the cabins in the neighborhood. Beautiful, isn't it?

Coming back down to the cabin area just as the sun was going down also provided one last beautiful view in its own way.

So there you go, I'm sure that for many of you, this will be quite distant from what you've experienced these past few days. But that's what makes it fun for me to sit down, have a few Christmas beers, and share what the Christmas holidays are like over here.

Cheers to you all! And yet again, I hope you're having a wonderful holiday season :)

It's beautiful, but looks way too cold for my preferences. Merry Christmas Fredrik

The views and atmosphere is simply amazing! But yeah, I woudln't mind a airplane ticket to the Cansri Islands and celebrate new years in warmer weather after this 😅

I miss gingerbread and glögg.

Had glugg outside the cabin during the final hours of sunlight when we returned back after the hike! 😁

Nice pics. I miss the Norwegian sun during the winter. It's been four years since I haven't been there. Didn't like those long days during summer though, couldn't sleep well at all. Have a great holiday!

I know I already wish you the best for the next year, but with those lovely pictures I need to do it again ;)

How often do you go to your cabin every year? I wish I could buy some small place in the Alps one of these days (this is however not the priority).

Thanks again! 😁

I try to go at least 3 times each year. Once around Christmas, once for Easter and once during summer. But that's because I now live on a different side of Norway (Oslo) compared to my parents (Stavanger), so that limit how often I end up going as I have to take a plane (or drive 7 hours) to get there. Back when I lived in Stavanger I would go there maybe 15-20 times each year.

I assume that there is no train option in Norway, isn't it? Sorry for the silly question, but I really do not know Norway.

Love these Fredrik! I've not been to Norway before but looks like a hikers paradise when it's not totally snowed over. I've never skied either but think my knees would probably be ended if I tried it there haha!

How far north in Norway is your cabin?

Glad you like it! I usually prefer hiking in summer. Now is a bit rough because you have to make sure you walk in a route where you have good footing. Which you can't take for granted when it's half snow-covered.

The cabin is not very far North. It is still in "southern Norway". Just 1hr45min drive from he Southwest coast and into the center of the country, where you have more mountains and more shelter from the Atlantic weather.

Yeah when it rains in the UK, always have to look out for slippery rocks which may be hidden too as those can be dangerous. Boots with ankle support will help a lot!

Sounds like a great location. Not too far away from anywhere!

Thanks for sharing your hike here. Getting some ideas for when I can afford a trip to Norway. Heard it's expensive out there!

Happy Holidays to you and family. It's a lovely place to spend the holiday!

Shiva looked like she had a great time! I love the pink socks! lol

I feel culturally dumb having read that you don't have snow but a couple weeks a year in Norway. I always think of Norway as snow all over (Another great reason I joined Hive-to read about others' cultures!). As for most people having 2-3 vacation homes, I find that amazing! Is it that homes are cheaper or what? I'm guessing they're simple homes with the basic pleasures for life?

Happy Near Year to you! Good to see you had a merry Christmas!

beautiful mountainous landscape with snow ideal to say goodbye to this year 2021 and welcome to 2022 which we hope will be the final take off for #Hive. I have always liked snow and I hope to see it live very soon.

Wish I can witness snow fall for once. Lovely memory u wouldn't forget n enjoy ur holiday

Beautiful, thanks for sharing! Skal!

is there any wireless signal out there in the snow tundra?

Ya know I used hive / telos and my crypto.com card to buy a $200 starlink pre order for @mcsamm in Ghana in Africa so i bet we could see people in rural arctic norway like yourself with the new small rectangular starlink dish + small router + anker battery pack all neatly in one of your existing backpack with satelite dish sticking out the top back haha like a radio man.. and youll have the ability to live stream on @vimm with your hive account and starlink waaay out there in norway, maybe get some snowmobile towed trailer and set up waypoints with solar batteries and gas supplies for generators and have tundra starlink camping adventures all IRL live streamed and hive blogged, have science sensors and watch northern lights and live stream it lol

Helping to have starlink internet at rural communities in Africa would be a great way of making the hive blockchain accessible to all. Thanks always @ackza
