Minnows are in trouble ( Yes that mean's YOU )

in #nominpayout7 years ago (edited)

It was recently brought to my attention that some are trying to change the reward pool or more correctly put change the the min payout a post / comments will receive. The suggested min payout is $1.00. For us minnows, that's a drastic change as it's a rare occasion one of our comments/post reaches $1.00. This change is not set in stone and currently is only a suggestion.

Why was this suggested you may ask. Well the foundation for the suggested change is the spam comments that plague steemit from users. The theory is that once the $1.00 min. payout is introduced these spammers will no longer profit from spamming the same comment over and over again on multi-threads. One only needs to look at the introduction section to see many do this.

The problem with implementing such a change is that it lumps everyone together. Punishing the newbie / minnow user who are providing good content to the platform because you want to punish spammers. Good content can't always be defined by it's monetary value. If you are a newbie / minnow then for the most part your good content goes unnoticed aside from some other newbies / minnows commenting and upvoting. You can get a dozen upvotes from newbies that like your post and only have 0.05 in rewards. Why should such a comment have it's rewards removed due to wanting to punish spammers ? The answer is that it shouldn't. Newbies and minnows alike depend on these small payouts to grow our account. It's a momentum occasion when we see one of our comments has reached $1.00 in rewards.

If Steemit goes in this direction, for the most part only Dolphins and Whales ( posters with the most influence on steemit ) will be receiving the bulk of the payments. It's hard enough to succeed on steemit as a newbie / minnow if this is introduced it will only get harder. These small payments we receive as newbies is what helps us grow our account.

Click Here to visit the topic the suggestion was brought up in and voice your opinion. Create a topic of your own and help spread the word so more voices are heard. I am only a newbie myself but I am starting a new tag called, nominpayout , Please use it in any new topic about the subject you may create. It will help to keep our opinions in one place and garner support.

There are many better options to make steemit a better platform for it's users, like spreading out the rewards more evenly. There is no way hundreds or even thousands of votes should be worth less then one vote from another member. How about reducing or removing the time it takes to create a free account. I know I waited two plus weeks before being approved / accepted. How many members has Steemit missed out on because of that function ? I am willing to bet it's in the thousands. But those suggestions are better off left for another topic as each could spark giant conversations on their own.

I think the 2 cent minimum should be lowered to 1 cent.

I agree with you and that's something I forgot to touch on. I bet allot of steemians are unaware of that tidbit of information.

You could do another blog post about it. I've been letting most people know when I see those 1 cent or less upvotes and I've done 2 or 3 recent blog posts about it. Some people don't even seem to care and a lot of people don't even seem to want my upvotes. I like this site but since I can make money on it why not try and make money on it?

I pan on doing just that. Even if it reaches just a handful of members at least a few more will be informed of the situation.

That's a much better idea!

This is a terrible idea. It is so hard to grow your account at the start and people can spend months of posting for cents before they gain some real traction. Not all of the spam is down at the bottom as well, there is lots of it in the trending section the only difference is it has been backed with bot to raise it's payout.
I'm sure that there is plenty spam out there but we need to wait for hivemind to come in before making any drastic changes and then see how the communities function with regards to posting. I'm sure that there will be a change in trends once we have this function up and running.

I agree, it's a terrible idea. If steemit goes through with this and makes min. payouts $1.00 we are going to see a drop in active users here. As another poster here pointed out - there will always be those trying to game the system no matter what system is in place.

Have a great day!

Thank you for helping to spread the word.

I get it if it's just 4 comments, but if you got a post that made 20 sbd.... let the person who posted that get the 20 sbd! I'm a minnow and my average like 0.10 per post but sometimes i hit like 10 plus and when i hit 10 sbd, i'd like to keep that 10. Good post bro

Thanks, this effects allot of members here on steemit. This place is already hard enough for new members to succeed. Putting a $1.00 min payout on comments will only make it harder and stunt the growth of the platform.

True, i remember when i got a comment that reached 6.50 something, it made me so happy and i want new minnows to get to feel that way!

Still need to read the original post, but in your first couple of sentences you got me confused about whether this is about comments or posts...
Nevertheless, I think it’s a stupid suggestion. SteemIt is already killing itself with all its flaws, why do people want to speed up that process? i mean.., if that would become the case, I can’t imagine why red fish or minnows would want to stick around...
Now, off to the next post you linked to...

The change is for both posts and comments. I edited my first paragraph to include post / comments instead of just saying one or the other. Hopefully that helps with the confusion.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I wasn’t aware of this.
It’s all easy when you have a 70 rep and thousands of sp...
Another prove of how many things are wrong with this platform.
I hope the people that I like to refer to as ‘the new generation’, which is us, will have time enough to grow our accounts without forgetting where we came from and will get a chance to have a good influence. ‘Cos this is just ridiculous...
Resteemed to get more people to kick his ass for being so ignorant

Your welcome,

Hopefully we can reach as many as possible so they can voice their opinion. It takes allot of work for a newbie to reach $1.00 in rewards on one of their posts. It's hard for some to even break the $ 0.10 cent mark and now we have people wanting to take that away. This place will turn into a ghost site if it keeps going in that type of direction. Its bad enough as it is watching shit post from people with lots of SP getting 100's in rewards while a newbies post that looks like it took hours to construct goes almost unnoticed.

Kind of reminds of the politicians in DC who have never been grocery shopping. They have no clue what a struggle it is for the lower class...

That is exactly what is going on. What these accounts with large amounts of SP need to realize is they need new accounts to come join steemit and stick around. All the SP on Steemit will be no good to them if the minnows get fed up and leave the platform.

ya this is frustrating, i honestly doubt this would have much effect on spammers anyways there's always going to be people who try to take advantage of the system. kinda just screws smaller contributors

Truer words have never been spoken.

In any system there will be those who try to take advantage.

new people on the platform are not minnows they are plankton.

Minnow have atleast 1M vest. Me is a big plankton with 720k vest.

What does "1Mvest" or "720k vest" mean, @cloudspyder?

Thank's for the information. I heard a couple different fish references and how they apply.

If this one happened... then time to leave steemit for good and find another opportunity outside. There's no reason to stay after all. You just make whales fatter.

That's exactly what will happen. Steemit's active user count will plummet.

Good info, sad story ;)(

Good idea! thanks for important information

I believe there are already changes like this one suggested by Tim Cliff coming in the next Hard Fork. It's called Velocity, and aside from making account creation faster, it's also supposed to get rid of the dust threshold and adjust the reward payout down, if I remember right.

The link to the last information I've seen about what is coming when HF 20 Velocity hits is here.

Strange thing is, Tim Cliff as a witness must be aware of this, so either there's something I've missed (entirely possible) and these changes are not forthcoming, or whatever he is suggesting would come on top of this.

As it is, I don't see any other updates regarding HF 20 on the steemitblog, so unless it was posted elsewhere, I'm going with this. There have been plenty of other updates there since the one about HF 20, but the more notable ones have discussed other things we're waiting on, such as Hivemind, Communities and SMTs.

At this point the $1.00 min payout for post / comments is just a suggestion. A bad one at that, the more people we make aware of it the better.

Oh, I know it's just a suggestion. It's more like a thought. I'm just trying to point out that something like this is supposedly already in the works. The steemitblog link I provided in my comment details what they're already planning to do. So it's confusing to me why Tim Cliff would be thinking out loud about increasing the dust threshold when it's already being coded into the next HF to eliminate it entirely.

the original post stated above .01, somehow people are freaking out and reading 1.00, kind of like that old game telephone. lol
its for upvotes and comment awards but still the noobs are taking this and running with their hair on fire.
hopefully many of us (including minnows) that are saying this isnt a good to support the planks and platform will be heard. ive made some suggestions and maybe someone with power will notice.

The post linked in the thread has the suggestion of $1.00 min payouts in it. If something even close to that passes it's going to hurt this platform. It's discouraging enough for new members as it is.

the posts are people talking, that was not what tim cliff stated, nor that that would be what is happening Now. the only thing happening Now is the over .01

I never said the min. payout was happening ... I said that it currently is a suggestion. Here is a direct quote from his article where he mentions increasing the payouts to min. $1.00.

"If we increased this threshold up to 0.10 SBD, or even 0.25 or 1.00 SBD - then posts/comments that did not receive sufficient votes to pass this threshold would receive zero payout. This would likely decrease the incentive for users to create spam."

im referencing your title and first paragraph, then comments. the ones it will hurt most are planktons as commented by someone else. hopefully, people will do further research after reading this post. the suggestion by TC is confusing enough.

Your stance is confusing. You mention Tim but then say it was my title and first paragraph you were talking about. There is nothing false in either my title or paragraph. If the suggested $1.00 max payout becomes a reality, Minnows and new members ( or planktons ) will be in trouble. I hope people do further research as well. That is one of the points of me making this topic and leaving a link to the original suggestion in it.

Yeah, I got all of that. I'm just trying to tell people that according to the last post on the matter by steemitblog back in late December, the next hard fork is supposed to eliminate the dust threshold completely, and make some kind of downward adjustment to payouts. Don't know how that would affect Tim Cliff's thinking out loud, but he should be aware of the changes coming, unless they've been rescinded, which I can't find evidence of (but then that's par for the course.)

i was not doubting you got it, i was stating that in this post, which did not reflect the original tim cliff post. the info that is current and not the comments in the post. he was askong everyone what they thought about future increases but not the actual. did you ask tim cliff on his post he made now 3 days ago? he is responding to all reactions to his post.

CONGRATULATIONS YOUR PUBLICATION HAS BEEN SHARED BY @Untapentuoreja, will be seen by 3025. steemians.

The war on spam is getting out of hand. Much like the war on terror, spam and abuse need definitions we can agree on. Flagging posts because a whale disagrees with someone's business model, is a form of extreme abuse imo, much worse than a spammy comment on a thread. Thanks for speaking out in this post. The community needs this.

Agree, there will always be some abusing the system and there will always be spam. Min payout for post / articles are only going to hurt the growth of the platform.

It is a solution that does more harm than the problem. More accurately, it does more harm to some than others. We really should recognise this strategy off the bat. Collateral damage, ring any bells?

Newbies are generally called plankton. 😉

And my blood is boiling as this is the opposite of what the site need. We need more payout for minnows and plankton not less.

Less payout will mean more plankton will abandon there accounts and probably move to https://www.minds.com which will soon add cryptocurrency to there platform.

Yes but allot of newbies are unaware of being plankton or the fish analogies that are used here on steemit. Nice plug btw :).

I agree the site will be going in the wrong direction if something like a $1.00 min is ever put into place. The current min is $0.02 I did a post on it that can be found here.
