별다방을 사랑하는 노마드 워커 - 이동윤

이 글은 [노마드 워커 이야기] 책 속에 나오는 제가 인터뷰 했던 내용입니다.

안녕하세요, 윤들닷컴 대표 이동윤입니다. 저는 디자인을 전공했지만, 사회초년생일 때 2~3년을 제외하고는 20여 년의 커리어 대부분이 IT기업에서 기획과 PM업무 그리고 여러 교육기관에서 진행한 디자인 강의 경력입니다. 디자인툴을 잘 다루고 혼자서 시각디자인/ 웹-앱 디자인/ 영상디자인/ 제품디자인 등 거의 다 하지만, 정작 회사조직에서는 디자인 실무를 하지 않고 있네요. 9년 전 제주도에 홀연히 내려갔다가 지금은 다시 고향인 부산으로 돌아와서 잘 다니던 회사를 관두고 1인 기업 도서출판 윤들닷컴의 대표로 활동 중입니다.

여러 가지 직업을 가지고 있는데, 가장 메인격인 출판사는 주로 제가 직접 집필한 국가공인 디자인 자격증 수험서의 집필과 출판을 하고 있고, 최근에는 '내 인생 내 이름 적힌 책 한 권'이라는 프로젝트로 저자 인큐베이팅 (무료출판지원)을 하고 있습니다. 1000명의 저자를 배출하고 1000권 이상의 책을 출판하는 것을 목표로 하고 있어요.
또한, 제가 그동안 학교에서 배우거나 회사에 다니면서 쌓은 지식 콘텐츠로 ‘디자인 / 콘텐츠제작 / 영상 / SNS 마케팅’ 관련 강의들을 하며 전국을 누비고 있고, 재능기부 형식으로 '어르신들을 위한 스마트폰 활용법'과 같은 의미 있는 강의도 병행하고 있습니다.
I have several jobs. The most important publishing company is the author of a national design certificate that I wrote myself. The goal is to produce 1000 authors and to publish more than 1000 books.
In addition, I have taught knowledge contents that have been accumulated at school or in the workplace, giving lectures related to ' Design / Content Creation / Video / SNS Marketing ', and utilizing ' Smart Phones and Meaningly-sponsored ' as a means for senior citizens.

이번이 인생에 있어서 3번째 창업인데요. 웬만하면 직원을 두지 않고 혼자서 할 수 있는 범위 내에서만 일하려고 합니다. 그래서 고정적인 사무실도 딱히 필요 없고, 미팅할 때에도 외부 카페 등을 선호하는 편이라 주로 집 근처의 카페를 사무실 삼아 일하고 있어요.
This is the third time in my life that I started a business. I don't have any employees, so I try to work on my own. So, I don't really need a fixed office, and I prefer an outdoor cafe for meetings, so I usually work in an office near my house.

직업의 특성상 대용량 콘텐츠를 다루고, 소스들을 찾아내서 거의 실시간으로 다운로드를 받아야 하는 프로세스가 많아서 인터넷 속도가 충분히 보장되어야 하는 스타벅스를 애용합니다. (스타벅스 커피는 별로지만 공간을 사랑하는 별 중독자예요).
Because of the nature of my job, I prefer Starbucks because it has a lot of processes for handling large content, finding sources and downloading them almost in real time. (Starbucks coffee is not very good, but it's space-loving, start-addicted.)

윤들닷컴 이라는 출판사를 시작하고 1000권 프로젝트를 진행 중인 지금까지
I started a publisher called datkeom and I've been working on the 1000 books.

윤들닷컴이라는 회사는 사실 최근에 다니던 회사를 관두면서 3번째 창업으로 시작한 것이 아니라, 2007년도 경에 창업한 회사입니다. 2007년부터 현재까지 다른 회사생활과 병행하면서 세컨드잡으로 운영을 해왔어요. 사실 책을 출판한다는 것이 하루아침에 뚝딱 진행되는 일이 아니고 꾸준히 시간을 투자해야 하는 업무여서, 투잡으로 하기에 적당한 일이었죠.
Yoon Doll.com is not actually the third company to start out by quitting its recent company, but it was founded around 2007. Since 2007, I have been operating in a second-stringed manner, working alongside other company life. In fact, publishing a book was a good thing to do because it was not something that would take a sudden turn of the day, but something that would require a steady investment of time.

군대를 제대하고 디자인학원에서 강사로 잠시 일하던 시절에 웹디자인과정의 마지막 단계인 포트폴리오반에 있던 학생들이 웹디자인기능사라는 자격증 시험을 본다고 해서, 커리큘럼에는 없었지만 공부하는 걸 도와주고 있었는데, 학생들이 산 수험서가 굉장히 불편하더라고요.
When I was a briefly instructor at a design academy after finishing my military service, I heard that the students in the last stage of the web design course, the Portpolio, were going to take a certificate exam, and they didn't have an uncomfortable license.

대한민국에서 자격증이라는 것은, 특히 디자인 분야의 커리어에서 자격증은 있어도 없어도 그만이라 딱히 필요 없다고 생각하는 사람 중의 한 명인데, 그래도 취업준비생의 입장에서는 이력서에 한 줄 들어가면 좋긴 해요. 그런데 많은 시간 투자 필요 없이 짧은 시간 공부해서 딸 수 있어야 하는데, 시중에 있는 책들은 너무 정석적이었어요. 그래서 불필요한 과정을 없애고 자격증을 따기 위해 가장 최적화된 프로세스로 교안을 만들다 보니까 족집게 교재가 만들어진 것이죠. 만들고 보니 학원에서 교재로만 쓰기 아까워서 공식적으로 출판을 하고 유통을 하게 되면 더 많은 수험생이 쓸데없는 시간 낭비 없이 자격증을 취득할 수 있을 것이란 생각이 들어서 수험서를 출판하던 대부분의 출판사에 원고를 보내봤습니다.
In Korea, qualifications are one of those who don't think they need to be certified, especially in the field of design, but for job seekers, a good line from their resume is still good. However, I had to study a lot of time and be able to grow it in a short time without having to invest much time, but the books on the market were too formal. So, to eliminate the unnecessary process and to get a license, the most optimal process is to create a teaching aid, and therefore, a tweezers course book was created. As I wrote only textbooks, I felt that if I formally publish and distribute them, I would be able to get most of the certificates issued by the applicants without wasting any time.

그러던 차에 웅진출판사의 임프린트사인 웰북출판사에서 연락이 왔고, 써놨던 원고를 싹 갈아엎는 인고의 과정을 거쳐서 웹디자인기능사 수험서 실기책을 출판할 수 있었습니다. 다행히 책이 인기가 좋아서 오프라인, 온라인 할 거 없이 몇 주간 수험서 분야에서 베스트셀러가 되었고, 담당자가 퇴사하고 나중에야 듣게 된 이야기지만, 8쇄까지 재판도 찍게 되었습니다. 그 후로는 필기 3종, 실기 2종을 추가로 집필을 하게 되었고, 나름 출판사의 간판 저자가 되었죠.
Then I got a call from Public Publishing Company's Imprint, Welbook, and then I recoiled the manuscript they had written to me so I could publish a practical web designer's book. Fortunately, the book was popular, so I became a bestseller in the field of test books offline and online for several weeks, and later I heard a story from a manager, but I took the trial by the 8th impression. After that, he wrote three more notebooks and two more practical papers, and he became a leading author at his own publishing company.

대체로 자격증은 시험유형이 잘 바뀌지 않습니다. 한 번 잘 만들어둔 콘텐츠로 오랫동안 지속할 수 있죠. 외부 출판사를 통해 6종의 책을 2년간 12권을 집필하고 독립출판사인 윤들닷컴을 창업하고 2종을 더해서 총 16권의 책을 만들었습니다. 디자인 분야의 국가공인 자격증이 더는 없어서 집필할 수 있는 책이 없었죠. 그래서 다른 분야의 책을 출판하게 되었어요. 특히, POD를 접하면서부터 이때껏 책을 만들고 유통하는 방식이 비합리적이었다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.
Typically, certificates do not change their exam type very well. It can go on for a long time with content that you've done well once. Six kinds of books were written by an external publisher for two years, and the independent publisher, Yoondul.com, opened its own website and added two kinds to make a total of 16 books. I didn't have a national certificate of qualifications for design, so I didn't have any books to write. So I started publishing books in different fields. And especially, since I've seen the POD, I've found that the way books are made and distributed so far is unreasonable.

책을 쓴 저자가 인세를 많이 받아야 하는데, 유통사에서 책정가의 50% 이상을 가져가게 되는 시스템이었죠. POD는 이런 불합리함이 없습니다.
The author of the book needs a lot of royalties, which would give the retailer more than 50 percent of the book's price. The POD is not this absurd.

다만 소량으로 주문이 들어올 때마다 책을 한 권씩 만들다 보니 대량으로 인쇄를 할 때본다는 제작단가가 높다는 단점은 있습니다. 책을 보관해야 할 공간이나 운영하고 보내주는 시스템이 확 줄어서 유통보다는 출판사와 작가가 더 많이 가져갈 수 있는 시스템이에요.
However, the disadvantage is that the cost of printing them in bulk is high, as each book is printed on a small order. Because there is less room to store and operate and send books, it is a system that publishers and authors can take more with them than distribution.

그래서 1000명의 저자를 배출하는 프로젝트도 대부분은 POD 방식으로 진행하고 있습니다. 초벌 원고만 보내주면 제가 교정&교열 / 내부페이지 디자인 / 표지 디자인 / 서지등록 등의 모든 과정을 ‘무료’로 해드립니다. 그리고 책이 잘 팔리던 안 팔리던 수익이 발생하면 저자와 50% 씩 나누고 있지요. 사실 큰 수익을 바라고 책을 만들진 않습니다. 저자도 그걸 알죠. 하지만 ‘내 인생에 내 이름의 책 한 권’ 정말 멋지지 않은가요?
So most of the projects that produce 1000 authors are doing it in the POD way. Just send us your first draft and I'll ‘ free ’ you all processes, such as proofreading, heat, internal page design, cover design, and surge registration. And when the book or the book doesn't sell well, we divide it by 50 percent with the author. I don't actually make a book for a profit. The author knows that. But isn't it wonderful to read a book of my name in my life?

현재의 업무 방식 및 라이프 스타일
Current Work and Lifestyle

게으름과 바지런함의 극과 극을 동시에 가지고 있는 성격과 업무 스타일 덕분에 지금은 최대한 일을 덜 하려고 해요. 뭐 그렇다고 여유시간에 개인적인 취미나 다른 관심사가 있는 것은 아니고, 주3일 정도만 집중해서 일하고 4일은 육아와 집안일을 하거나 개인 공부를 하는데 시간을 많이 할애하기 위해서입니다. 사실은 일하기 싫습니다. 그래서 외주일은 단가가 높은 일 위주로 하고, 특강 요청을 받으면 대부분 하는 편입니다. 저는 시간이 곧 돈이거든요.
Because of my character and work style, I try to work less because I have both laziness and sluggishness at the same time. Well, I don't have any personal hobbies or other interests in my free time, but I work hard only about three days a week, and four days long days in order to do childcare, home work or study. Actually, I don't want to work. Therefore, outsourcing days are usually based on high unit price and when the classes are requested, they are mostly done. Time is money to me.

아직 어린이집을 보내지 않는 아들 덕분에 집에서는 컴퓨터 앞에 앉아 있을 수가 없기도 하고, 집에서는 어떤 이유에서든 나태해지는 습성 등의 이유로 집 근처 카페에서 업무를 봅니다. 간단한 업무는 스마트폰을 이용해서 틈틈이 처리하고요(그래서 제 업무 스타일을 이해하지 못하는 와이프는 스마트폰 좀 그만 보라고 잔소리를 가끔 합니다). 아직은 제 시간의 많은 부분을 육아에 투자하려고 하다 보니 평소엔 낮 12시 정도에 카페로 출근하고, 오후 4~5시 정도에 퇴근(?)합니다. 업무 부팅 시간이 많이 걸리는 편인데 집중을 하면 굉장히 빠르게 업무를 보는 스타일이라 4시간 정도면, 남들 3일 치 업무를 볼 수 있습니다(강도 높은 회사생활을 해봐서 일지는 모르겠습니다).
Because of my son who has not yet sent me a nursery home, I can not sit at home in front of a computer, and work at a cafe nearby my house for whatever reason. I do simple tasks from time to time using my smartphone (so my wife sometimes nags me to stop looking at my smartphone if she doesn't understand my style.)I still try to spend a lot of my time on childcare, so I usually go to the cafe at about noon, and I get off work around 4 to 5 p.m. It takes a long time to get back to work, but when I focus on it I can get to work very fast, and in about four hours, I can get to work on three different days ' work.

최대한 직원을 두지 않기 위해서 혼자서 할 수 있는 업무만 한다고 말씀드렸는데요, 솔직하게 말씀드리면, 저도 예전에 직원을 7명씩 두면서 회사를 운영한 경험이 있는데, 회사 운영이 업무적인 부분보다는 인간관계를 잘 형성하는 것이 가장 어려운 점이었던 것 같아요. 저는 절대로 가족 같은 회사, 친형제 같은 분위기 따윈 없다고 생각하거든요. 그래서 웃긴 소리지만 지금 저하고 비슷한 복사본, 제가 할 수 있는 모든 것들을 똑같이 할 수 있는 클론이 직원으로 있었으면 좋겠다고 생각해요. 말도 안 되죠.
I told you that I only do what I can do to keep myself from having the best employees. To tell you the truth, I had the hardest time running a company with seven employees, rather than with seven employees. I don't think there is anything like a family company, or a brother. So it sounds funny, but I want to have a similar copy of myself as an employee, a clone to do everything I can. That's ridiculous.

그래서 프로젝트를 쉐어링 할 수 있는 1인 기업이 모여서 큰 규모의 군집체가 있었으면 좋겠다는 꿈을 꿉니다. 여러 가지 일을 할 수 있는 사람들이 모여서 시간이나 능력이 부족해서 할 수 없는 일을 다른 사람이 대신 할 수 있는 방식이죠. 이러한 공생 관계의 구조가 한 덩어리의 회사라면, 회사가 일하면 할수록 점점 커리어가 늘어갈 수 있는 거잖아요. 그런데 1인 기업은 한계는 혼자서 할 수 있는 일이 많지 않기 때문에 대형 기업들에 밀릴 수밖에 없는 힘든 상태죠. 이런 생각들이 과연 가능할지 페이스북에서 ‘부산IT프리랜서그룹’를 만들고 운영하면서 시도해보려고 하고 있어요.
So, I would like to have a large group of one-man companies who can shower projects together. It's a way for other people to get together and do things that they don't have the time or the ability to do. If the symbiotic structure is a company, the more you work, the more you can get. But one-man companies have a hard time being pushed by big businesses because they don't have many things to do on their own. We're trying to form and run a Busan IT freelance group on Facebook to see if these ideas are possible.

잘 될지는 모르겠습니다. 회사라는 조직이라면 팀을 이끌어야하는 책임이 있으니 싫더라도 진두지휘를 해야 되지만, 어디 온라인커뮤니티가 누군가가 이끈다고 잘 된다는 보장도 없고, 또 저랑 비슷한 생각을 하는 사람들이 많이 있으면 좋겠지만, 대부분의 프리랜서들은 입에 풀칠하기도 바쁜 경우도 많습니다.
I don't know if it will work. If you're an organization that has the responsibility to lead a team, and you don't like it, you have to lead it, but if you have a lot of people on the Internet who don't know you're going to be good at it, and if you're not as happy with someone on the Internet, you are.

하지만 고민만 하고 아무것도 못하는 것보다 시도해보고 좌절하더라도 일단 해보려고 합니다.
But I don't want to worry about anything, but I want to try and get frustrated, and I want to do it.

앞으로에 대한 이야기
A story from the future

직장 생활과 프리랜서(1인 기업, 강사)를 번갈아 가면서 3번의 사이클을 돌았습니다. 둘 다 장단점이 있는데, 지금은 노마드 워커로 일하고 있는 상황에 상당히 만족하는 편입니다. 나름 경력과 연식(?)이 있다 보니 회사에 다녀도 적지 않은 급여로 생활이 가능하지만, 그에 상응하는 회사에서의 기대치가 있는데 조금은 피곤하다는 생각이 듭니다.
She has traveled three cycles, taking turns in office life and freelance (one-man businesses, instructors). Both have good and bad points, but I'm quite satisfied with my current work as a Normad Walker. Because of my experience and my model year, I can live on a salary that is not too small, but I feel I'm a little tired when I have an expectation from the company that is appropriate.

그리고 '회사=나 자신'이라는 착각의 늪에서 빠져나온 지 오래되어서 직장에서의 성취감이 그리 크지 않아요. 소소하지만 오롯이 나를 위한 프로젝트를 하는 것이 좋습니다.
And I haven't had much of a sense of achievement at work since I've been out of the illusion for a long time. Even though it is small, it is good to do project for me.

출판사 이외에도 제법 유명한 교육기관에서 강의제의도 꾸준히 이어지고 있고, N사나 I사에서도 강사로 활동하고 있어요. 지면상으로 밝힐 수 없는 꽤 비밀스러운 클라이언트들과의 관계도 잘 유지하면서 콘텐츠 제작 외주도 계속할 예정입니다.
Besides publishing companies, there are also many other famous educational institutes that offer lectures, and there are also N companies and I companies that serve as instructors. We will continue to outsource our content while keeping our relationship with fairly secretive clients on the ground.

하고 싶은 일을 하면서 돈까지 잘 버는 건, 아직도 잘 못 하겠어요. 돈은 최대한 제 능력으로 남들보다 쉽게 할 수 있는 프로젝트 위주로 하고, 재미있는 일은 돈은 적게 벌어도 기회가 된다면 놓치지 않고 할 겁니다. 그리고 제 커리어나 능력치에 도움이 되는 교육을 하면 무조건 가서 들어보고 있어요. 단, 저는 열정페이 따위 나중을 위한 일 따위는 하지 않을 겁니다. 이미 세상을 많이 알아버린 40대죠.
I still can't do well, doing what I want to do and making good money. Money is based on projects that are easier to do with my ability than others, and I will do anything interesting with the least amount of money I can afford, but I will not miss the opportunity. And I always go and listen whenever I have an education that helps me in my career or ability. But I'm not going to do anything like a fever pitch. She's already in her 40s who knows a lot about the world.

가족들의 생계를 책임져야 하는 가장의 입장에서 직장생활보다 더 열심히 일해야 하는 부담은 있지만, 회사 다닐 때 하지 못했던 여러 인적 네트워킹을 쌓으면서 다양한 프로젝트를 추진 중이고, 또 그 결실을 거두고 있습니다.
I have the burden of having to work harder than my career, in the most part, to support my family, but I'm also working on various projects, building up networking that I didn't have when I was in the business.

가정도 있는 사람이 팔자 좋게 산다고 빈정 사는 경우도 간혹 있는데, 뭐 어쩌겠습니까? 저는 지금의 저를 사랑하고 제가 하는 모든 일들을 사랑합니다. 그리고 1인 기업은 항상 잘 먹고 잘 살고 있다는 걸 외부로 알려야 일도 잘 만들어진답니다. 하하하하하하하!
Sometimes a family member can live happily ever after. What can you do? I love who I am and what I do. And you have to let people know that single-person companies are always doing well and that they are doing well. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
