Potential NHL Future Expansion (My Top 5 Cities)

in #nhl7 years ago (edited)

Las Vegas was recently awarded a NHL team that will begin to play in the 2017–18 NHL season. The team will be called the Vegas Golden Knights. This will be the first major league team to be established in the Las Vegas metropolitan area. After the expansion, the Oakland Raiders will move to the Vegas market by 2020.

This shows that other cities like Vegas can and should be considered to be awarded a NHL team. I will state the top five cities that should be considered to get a NHL team and why.

Honorable Mentions
Kansas City, Greater Toronto Area, Montreal Area, Portland, Indianapolis, Houston, Cleveland, Stockholm,Salt Lake City

Number 5: Seattle, Washington

The the emerald city is home to a MLB and NFL team (the Mariners and the Sea-hawks). Seattle hosted the NBA team the Seattle SuperSonics until they relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City. The city is still crying till this day of the loss and for good reason. With a good fan base when it come to sports, the NHL should considered to award the Seattle with a team. Hockey was in the city back in the day with the Seattle Metropolitans in the 1915-1924 and was the first American team to win the Stanley Cup in 1917. With a milestone in history as such, Gary Bettman should look at Seattle for expansion.

Number 4: Quebec City, Canada

The Nordiques called Quebec City home form 1972 to 1995 before moving to Colorado to become the Avalanche who won the Stanley Cup in their first at their new home. Quebec has been dying for a NHL team since the Nordiques left. The past expansion that recently occurred, Quebec was speculated to be awarded a team. With high hopes, Quebec didn't have the proper funds to host a team. This city bleeds hockey and wants one so bad that even citizens of the city have invested money in order to get a team back. This city will make money because a strong fan base.

Number 3: Hartford, Connecticut

Just like Quebec, Hartford was home to the Whalers before moving to North Carolina in 1997 to become the Hurricanes. The New England region is a wide one that consist of six states. With plenty of AHL teams in the area, the only NHL team in the region is the Boston Bruins. New Englanders would love to have another NHL team and have a rivalry at hand again. The market is fairly good, but after losing the Whalers, Hartford has noticed the value of the team and are thirsty of another to host a NHL team in the near future.

Number 2: Hamilton, Canada

Canada is a country that is hungry for hockey. The Hamilton is a city that has not hosted a NHL team for decades. The last NHL team to call Hamilton home were the Hamilton Tigers from 1920-1925 before their contracts were sold to New York City, making way for now the defunct New York/Brooklyn Americans. This city has the proper needs to host a team. Canada plenty of other cities that can host an NHL team, Hamilton is a market that should be considered.

Number 1: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

In 1988, in hopes of drawing a team to Wisconsin, the city of Milwaukee built the Bradley Center. Home to the NBA’s Bucks, the Bradley Center hosted the IHL/AHL Admirals from 1988–2016. The Admirals have a rich history when it comes to the AHL. The city is proximity to Chicago, another huge hockey town. With this expansion, a new rivalry can be born in the region. Milwaukee has shown a loyal fan base when it come to the Admirals. Lets just imagine how much support the city would give if a NHL team called Milwaukee. Used-Gym-Equipment-MilwaukeeWI.jpeg

That's nice to learn new things about the NHL! Thanks for posting this awesome article, @samdaman!
Upvoted & Followed you as well!

great post... i think Toronto area could use another team as well as Quebec . iot would be nice to see another team out east but there is no market sadly but if Canada could get 2 more teams it would help set the few teams we have..

Canada has plenty of room and fan base to host a good amount of other NHL teams. I think Toronto can host another team easy, but the Maple Leafs have a major foot in the market with a rich history when it comes to hockey. I think Tornado should get their own NFL team. They are a big city with a great diverse population. Sometimes, I think Alaska should get a team. Then in actuality the first NHL player to play in the NHL came in 1998, Scott Gomez. The NHL market is difficult to place in the US, especially when it comes to the south.

yes, Toronto does hold the south part of Ontario but hamilton is a great pick maybe even something up north like sudbury would be good.. yes the USA market is a hard one to see where teams wold be good with a good fan base. as for NFL i think a north expansion is due. we also need a couple more MLB teams up here in the north.

With the latest news, I thinks it's safe to say that Seattle will be the 32nd franchise in the NHL by 2020.
