Over the past 18 years, Akshaya Patra has been able to reach children in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas through its centralised and decentralised kitchens. It has been observed that the school meals have had a significant impact on:
• Countering classroom hunger;
• Increase in school attendance and enrolment of children;
• Decrease in drop-out rate;
• Improvement in health of children and level of concentration;
• Increased participation of children in school activities and enhanced socialisation among children.
The mid-day meal is a potential intervention in bringing children of low socio-economic background to school. With the hope that children will get at least one proper meal a day, parents tend to send them to school rather than pushing them to work. When children come to school, they get a platform to grow and develop in a desirable way with the needed nutrition and education. This helps them to achieve their goal and become resourceful citizens of the country.
