Waiheke Island is a little slice of paradise located just a 45 minutes outside of Auckland, but it is truly a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Recent articles have begun to talk about the jet-set image of the island. Yes, prices have increased, and in the summer the buzz of helicopters is as omnipresent as the fleet of super-yachts parked in Waiheke's bays. But is it possible to still come to Waiheke and have an authentic experience? The answer is, of course, what are you waiting for!!!
Here I am only discussing the best things to do on Waiheke (excluding vineyards, which I will write about soon, so keep an eye on my page!)
Beaches
Onetangi Beach
The location of this beach at the end of the bus line makes it a super popular spot. It gets a fun vibe in the summer when the beach gets packed. A great beach for sunbathing and families as the water isn't too deep! There are lots of good little cafés running along the beach too. Visit in winter to have kilometers of white sand all to yourself.
Little Oneroa Beach
The perfect beach for spending an afternoon. You will find a lot of locals and visitors here having a yerba maté on the beach and swimming. Can get too crowded in the summer though, so have a little wander around the rocks to the left at low tide to find you very own secluded cove under the cliffs!
Walks
The Coastal Walk
This short 2 hour walk starts at the ferry terminal (at low tide) and continues around the coast to the main village. Be prepared for unparalled views of the gulf islands, sheer cliffs with huge drops, and secluded bays. Waiheke gets damn hot in the summer and there is little shade along this trail so please be prepared and bring plenty of water and remember to wear sunscreen!
The Onetangi Forest and Bird Reserve
There is so much to see and do in this reserve. Keep, still and quiet and you will be able to catch many local birds like the tui (pictured), wood pigeon (kereru), and if you are lucky a kaka (a type of parrot). There is also a beautiful grove of Kauri trees in this reserve with a great viewing platform. It is a great spot for a enjoying some tea or having a sandwich while you relax and appreciate the beauty of nature.
Experiences
Jumping off the wharf at "The Bottom End"
The drive to the far side of the island will take about 45 minutes through some amazing roads and hills. Go on a warm day at low tide for an exhilirating jump. Be careful of strong tides in the area and never go alone. Ferries can also be taken from here to other islands in the gulf.
People watching in Oneroa
As mentioned this is an island popular with the rich and fabulous. Grab a latté at one of Oneroa's cafés and watch the show!
Sunsets
Yeah, I know, everyone says they have amazing sunsets, but seriously Waiheke delivers on that promise!
So what are you waiting get down here and check out this amazing Island!
