A man pulled a gun during a dispute with another customer in a Walmart checkout aisle in Pennsylvania near Philadelphia and opened fire leaving eight people injured before fleeing the scene to be arrested later after crashing into a police vehicle.
All injuries were minor and everyone is expected to survive.
The incident occurred just after 6pm on Tuesday night at Cedarbrook Plaza Shopping Center.
The gunfire started after an altercation between two men in different checkout lanes led to one of the men pulling a gun from his female companion's waistband and fired "at least 10 shots".
Two women and a man, all in their 40s were hit in the legs, another customer received a grazing wound and a fifth person was taken to hospital with unspecified injuries. A pregnant was taken to hospital after a fall.
It is unclear whether the intended target was among the shooting victims.
The shooter and his female companion attempted to flee, ditching the weapon from a car window but they were apprehended after they rear-ended a police vehicle sending both officers in that vehicle to the hospital along with the suspect's female companion.
The suspect had to be tased before his arrest as he was attacking the window of the police cruiser he had collided with.
Everyone is in stable condition and expected to survive.
