Dogan Media Group owned by Aydin Dogan, was sold to Demiroren Holding, a pro-government Turkish conglomerate on Wednesday. The sale was carried out for $1.25 billion.
Dogan Media Group had most of Turkey’s most prestigious media names including the Hurriyet daily newspaper, the CNN-Turk (a joint venture with CNN), and the Kanal-D channel.
The sale of Dogan Media Group will provide more media support for the government ahead of presidential elections next year. The sale sparkled fears of a further decrease of press independence in Turkey.
According to Committee to Protect Journalists, more journalists are being held in detention in Turkey than in any other country in the world. Source
