Living through Hurricane Wilma in 2005 was really scary. The lights were out, the traffic was bad and people got injured and lost loved ones, homes and pets. were swept away. Everyone is saying we are due for a hurricane and that this hurricane Irma is no joke at a category 5 right now over the Carribean, I am worried for my family in Puerto Rico because it's going to hit them tomorrow. I am really scared for them and praying they make it through this. A Category 3 was bad in 2005, so I can't even imagine a Cat 5 Hurricane and the devastation it will bring. Small storms knock out power in Puerto Rico for months If a storm of this magnitude hits them it will be months before they get power and fresh water.
They say it's going to hit Florida this coming weekend and being that I live right on the ocean I don't plan on sticking around to find out either way! I just hope my home is there when I get back and hopefully this storm goes off into the ocean and doesn't hit us. I see everyone from the supermarket to my job freaking out. I think the news has created a little bit of mass hysteria because they keep replaying the images of what happened in Texas. All we can do is wait and see what happens later on in the week and hope is misses us. My prayers go out to everyone in the Carribean right now and to the residents of Texas who were hit by the last hurricane.
Below is a small checklist I have found and I have added a link to a more extensive one.
Have enough food and water for each person for at least 3-7 days.
Water
• 1 gallon of water per person per day (additional water for bathing, etc.)
• Store water in clean plastic containers
Food
• Purchase foods that require no refrigeration and little preparation, such as:
• Ready-to-eat canned food
• Canned juices, milk, and soup
• Snacks, cookies and cereal
• Soft drinks, instant coffee, tea
• Lots of ice 'so you can freeze your water supply'
For Pets
• Newspapers, cardboard or cat litter
• Moist canned foods (to preserve water)
• Plastic sheets to cover floor of pet's room
Your Medicine
• First aid kit
• Rubbing alcohol
• Aspirin
• Extra prescription medication (especially for heart problems and diabetes)
• Personal Items of value bring with you in a zip lock or small lock box
• Toilet paper, towels, soap, shampoo
• Personal and feminine hygiene products
• Contact lenses and an extra pair of eyeglasses
Some Other supplies
• Battery-operated radio, flashlights, non-electric can opener, extra batteries
• Charcoal, waterproof matches, extra propane gas for grills (Use grills outside only!)
• Portable cooler
• Plastic trash bags
• Wind-up or battery-operated clock.
• Sheet plastic, duct tape.
• Paper napkins and plates, plastic cups
• A change of clothing per person, good shoes
• Make sure to have enough insect repellant because when it flooded all sorts of bugs come out.

Hi,
I just went through Hurricane Harvey. It was the MOST scariest thing I've been through. We had so much water. My neighbors all had water very high in their homes, to the point where they had to get on roofs. I've lived in Texas my entire life and have been witness to numerous hurricanes here. Nothing prepared me for the amount of water. My daughter and I ended up having to be rescued in a boat and taken to a shelter. We stayed there 4 days. My husband stayed home, to take care of our animals and I was on pins and needles the entire time. It was too much for me to handle. I can't swim, nor am I equipped to protect my daughter from flood waters. It could have been worse and it was for the many people who lost their lives, and their families and all of their belongings. I would have never anticipated this. We were 30 inches above the historical record regarding rainfall. If I could give one word of advice it would be to heed the warnings and get out of there. It was very surreal for me to see the water over my car and gate and looking at the water getting closer and closer threatening to breach my home and being an island surrounded by angry water. We were lucky as it didn't come in. But trying to fix my car and make it in to work is very stressful, keeping a positive view of things is paramount. I hope that you and your family will be safe and take the necessary precautions.
WOW, Brandi crazy all that happened, I wish you the best of luck and hope you get back on your feet quick. My prayers are with you.
Thank you, Your prayers are welcomed. :)
I hope our Floridian steemians are prepared! We all witnessed the devastation in Texas. This storm while different, has the potential to be equally destructive for likely different reasons (category 5... such intense winds).
Yes, I am leaving soon towards the Orlando area and tomorrow will check the news to see whats going on and if it's bad i will head to Alabama or Tn. How about you? Stay safe
I am up in Boston, so this is not (hopefully) an issue for me personally, however I know people with family in FL so I am hoping for their safety. Glad you are heading out of harms way, this storm looks to be an intense one. Reminds me of Andrew from all those years ago.
Be safe @road2wisdom, I have tons of friends in florida... tons are leaving :(
Thank you
Praying for you and your family in Puerto Ricos safety. 🙏 Please keep us posted how you are doing.

We reside right outside of Gainesville, FL and this is a wise thing to spread out there to our fellow Floridians. Scary one this time and I hope everyone takes heed to be safe and get out while they still can.
Yes, I agree better to be safe than sorry later.
good list, and we can hope for the best. I will be leaving on Sunday for a cruise in Alaska, and need to make sure all is nailed down, but have full metal shutter I can use to encase my house. Still, watching the news closely
Good I will be in out of state too but I need to make sure my home is secure as I live right on the beach! Stay sage and have fun on your Trip.
I am glad you will not be there as I suggested to you !! The waves will be horrendous, they were talking waves of 15 metres every 16 seconds ( I am praying that your house will be there when you get back !! Please keep me posted ! Upvoted @road2wisdom !

I live in Florida west coast and yes this is serious. Everyone PREPARE!
Your right, pray and hope for the best, I have family in Puerto Rico and wish them
