Disney Plans to Change Wench Bride Auction scene from Park Attraction

in #news7 years ago (edited)

Before there was a five film movie franchise starring Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean was a Disney theme park ride. One of the more controversial scenes in the ride is the Mercado auction "wench for a bride" scene. What can only be described as sex trafficking, the scene features a parade of tied up women being sold off as wives to the pirates. At one point a pirate yells out "We wants the redhead!"

The scene isn't being eliminated entirely, but the auction will instead be an auction of valuables that were looted from the townspeople. And the auction sign will be changed. Instead of reading “Take a Wench for a Bride” it will say “Surrender Your Loot”.

And that unnamed redhead, she'll still be a part of the attraction. She is being turned into a female pirate.

So what do you think? Is this political correctness gone wrong? Or is this a long overdue fix to blatant misogyny?

Nice article and thank you so much for sharing.

I have never regarded it as offensive, and I've seen it many times since the late 1970's! People are too easily offended today! Every fairy tale ever written will soon be banned because someone is offended. I do think political correctness is being carried too far! No one enjoying that ride is going to be coerced to go and round up women for an auction! And no woman that I know has ever said she is offended by it! 🙂
