I can't give you empirical data - but from what read around the net, there does seem to be big push back against hollywood in general, and lot's of 'block busters' just aren't performing...
hopefully my perception of the situation is a true one...I stopped watching hollywood a long time ago

I stopped watching television in the seventies.
I rarely watch movies...can't recall the last time I went to a theatre..
when I do watch movies it's generally 'netflix originals'...on this computer..
and not all that often.
me neither - theatre.
The only thing i have watched on tv in the last 4 years, is' vikings' - which i re watch, and is excellent IMO, and game of thrones -( because vikings isn't on till next year.) - the rest is historical docu's etc
(if you know the story line of GoT, check out my spoiler thread (its not a spoiler) - its just silly/funny take on it. If you don't watch it, don't bother - it will make no sense to you, whatsoever)
I dislike the Author of GOT...
that would adversely predjudice me agains the book...or TV show.
it really isn't lord of the rings, - you aren't not missing too much.
If I had an appointment watching some paint dray, I wouldn't feel like i was missing out!
I haven't watch Lord of the Rings either.
I'm not into fantasy all that much.
Me neither really, but I see Tolkiens story, one of describing the conflicts happening now - the death of humanity v's the fight for humanity.
More of an introduction to the big picture, for people.
I see it as nonsense.
Humans are defined by technology.
Tolkein did not address that.
