FOUR VILLAGES IN THE NORTHERN REGION OF GHANA GET COMMUNITY-BASED HEALTH PLANNING AND SERVICES(CHPS) COMPOUNDS

in #news7 years ago

Ghana currently has a little over 300 hospitals serving its over 27 million citizens. Apparently, this is highly insufficient and there are currently a good number of Ghanaians who do not have access to basic health care services. As one would expect, those of us inhabiting the villages and smaller communities are largely affected by this. Though not enough, the government of Ghana has done a great job in making universal health care a reality.

Over the past few years, the government has entered into partnerships with other international bodies, notable among them, the United States Agency for International development (USAID), to provide small clinics to the under privileged communities in the country. These clinics are are referred to as CHPS compounds.

According to Myjoyonline's news of 1st February, 2018, the USAID in conjunction with the Government of Ghana has inaugurated 4 CHPS compounds to serves the  Warivi, Tinsung, Kunkon and Nkwanta communities. In attendance were  Mr Robert Jackson (United States Ambassador to Ghana),  Mr Kwaku Agyeman-Manu (Minister for Health),  Mr Salifu Saeed (Northern Regional Minister) and  Mba Mion Lana Ziblim (The chief of the area).

The US ambassador emphasized the importance of CHPS compounds in promoting health care in the country. In his words:

The CHPS approach brings health services closer to your households and allows you to make the most productive use of your time. You will no longer have to travel long distances to seek health care. Pregnant women in your communities will no longer have to take long, bumpy rides on a motor-king (tricycle) to the district hospital.

Ambassador Jackson (in smock) assisted by Health Minister (on his left) and Northern Regional Minister (on his right) to cut ribbon to inaugurate CHPS compound at Warivi.

The US government, through the USAID Systems for Health project is expecting to finish 18 more CHPS compounds by December this year. The ambassador urged the people to actively partake in the maintenance and upkeep of the facilities. The Northern Regional Minister also promised to support with accommodation for the health professionals who will be serving there. The chief and people of the community were very excited and thanked the dignitaries present.

Let's support the Government of Ghana achieve universal health care to it's citizens by resteeming and getting this post far. Thanks for your support.
