I will have a more greater parade the you!

The world's only elected comedian and greatest and most mentally stablest president of all times is always in for a game of "Who has the biggest", even if the thing in question is just a button.

But when he visited France, President Trump was mightily, you may even say greatly, impressed by the military parade the country traditionally holds on the Bastille Day.

“It was one of the greatest parades I’ve ever seen,” Trump told reporters. “It was two hours on the button, and it was military might, and I think a tremendous thing for France and for the spirit of France.”
Seated next to Macron, Trump added: “We’re going to have to try to top it.”

It is strange to hear that from a western Monar... sorry, president. I know France does it because of the heritage of "L'état c'est moi!" (which Louis XIV likely never said in reality). I know that the former "communistic" countries did it as a show of strength against the US. And I know that all dictators like to do military parades to reassure themselves that they still are in power.

But whatever may be the reason for Trump, it is strange that he is adamant for a parade while at the same time crying about how under financed the US military is (only 2.15 times that of China and Russia together). Such a parade definitely is not to be made with only a few bus tickets for the soldiers!

Even stranger in my eyes is that the "small state" proponents aren't burning Trump flags about this waste of tax payer money.

Does your state hold military parades?

Sort:

Not as much as they used to but Romania does have military parades.

We were really screwed back in the day when Ceausescu visited North Korea, was greatly impressed but what he saw there, parade wise, and tried to replicate.

I have full faith in Trump to make the best parade. With blackjack and hookers,.

In my experience you can see a countries' place on an the liberal <-> dictatorship scale on their scope and number of parades, with a time component. It is a creepily correct measurement.

In the Russian army parades have become widespread since the late eighteenth century. In St. Petersburg annually held large parades: winter — on Palace square and spring — on the Champ de Mars. In addition, an annual summer parade was held in Krasnoye Selo. Large parades involving troops of several military districts ended military maneuvers. Parades were also held on the occasion of military holidays and anniversaries of military units. In modern Russia, parades are held mainly on may 9, to mark the Victory in the great Patriotic war. Since 2008 the military parade in red Square resumed participation of military equipment, including military aircraft.

Seeing as the UK is a Monarchy, we dont have many big military parades, there is one on the Queens official birthday, with a flyover from military aircraft.
UK also hosts the Edinburgh Tatoo, which is a military music show, but there are regiments from all over the world represented, so its not nationalistic.

Another step for America towards just becoming another nationalist hellhole bent on celebrating the State as the secular religion.

We don't have big military parades in the Netherlands. It would be embarrassing to show that we don't have any main battle tanks anymore. Soldiers and veterans do march on Veterans' Day. Locally, there will be parades of historical military vehicles around May 5, Liberation Day.

The Navy and Air Force won't have an open day this year because of budget cuts and other priorities. That was presented as an apolitical decision by the top brass. But the current government won't mind showing that the armed forces need more money.

From the outside, a major military parade doesn't seem out of character for the US, given the massive budget and the cultural importance of the military as well as showmanship. In France, mass mobilization is a republican, democratic tradition. In the US, this seems to be one area where the tradition of limited government hasn't caught up with reality yet.
