Mountain Agung in Karangasem, Bali, Indonesia, Erupted
Gunung Agung in Karangasem, Bali, erupted Tuesday (21/11) at around 17:05 WITA by issuing black smoke.
Information released by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources states that the smoke reaches a maximum height of about 700 meters above the mountain peak.
Spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said that the area around the mountain is still in the status of the third level alert and the public is encouraged to remain calm.
"Do not panic, stay away from the radius of 6 to 7.5 kilometers as recommended PVMBG," Sutopo said via Twitter.
PVMBG issued a warning to know areas entering the Hazard Zone covering several hamlets in Desa Ban, Sebudi Village, Besakih Village, Buana Giri Village, Jungutan Village, and Dukuh Village. Potential hazards that may occur are ash rain in areas that enter the Estimated Danger Zone. Currently the wind is blowing to the southeast.
"It is expected that all communities, especially those living around Mount Agung and on the island of Bali, to immediately prepare masks cover the nose and mouth and eye protection in an effort to anticipate the potential dangers of volcanic ash," PVMBG.
Mount Agung last erupted in 1963, about 1,500 people died.
