The Morning After the Kodiak Earthquake and Tsunami Warning

in #news7 years ago (edited)

This is my very first Steemit post.

This week we had an adventure in the middle of the night.

On Tuesday morning (January 23rd) at 12:31am, we were shaken by a big earthquake that lasted over a minute. When it finished I looked up the report and found it happened 170 miles away out in the ocean.

My mind immediately jumped to all the stories of a similar quake that triggered a tsunami destroying many homes and most of downtown abut 40 years ago.

Our apartment is in one of the buildings that was destroyed in that disaster, right across the street from the Harbor. Once the earthquake stopped, we got dressed, and packed some backpacks. We placed them by the door just in case the Tsunami sirens started.

Then we waited a few minutes later, the sirens started blaring.

Even though we were somewhat prepared, anxiety and adrenaline skyrocketed as we grabbed our little dog, backpacks, and blankets (it's the middle of winter in Alaska), loaded the truck and headed to higher ground.

The truck was low on gas so we went and waited in a long line at the gas station to fill up.

We spent the night at our friends home, but didn't sleep. We listened to the radio updates waiting to hear that our home had been destroyed.

Too add to the anxiety, the office I work at is also in the the tidal wave zone.

I spent the night wondering if I'd be homeless and unemployed in the morning.

But after a long night, the sirens turned off, the warning was canceled, and the sun rose. We were very happy to come home.

School was canceled for the children, but I was very grateful to be able to have to go to work that morning.

I took this video to show the beautiful morning after the near disaster.
