The education system in America today is not one designed to better the young anymore. In todays world it doesn't matter how smart you are or how fast you can calculate. Any hard jobs can now be completed by something computer generated. Our education system still aims to teach facts and helpful, book-smart, traits that can better a persons intelligence but it will not help ones ability to succeed in this world.
Students today are lacking the mental capacity to take in everything there is to learn while also learning how to interact with each other. As currently a student at the University of Florida, College of Education, it is very apparent the lack of focus our curriculum portrays when it comes to communication skills.
The ability to communicate and express the exact thoughts a person is thinking is huge in todays age. Everyone is smart enough to have an idea on how to fix the problem. The skills needed today are being able to listen to others while voicing your own opinion respectively. Showing empathy towards problems and listening to solutions is step 1. Step 2 is being able to voice exactly how you feel tactfully (without hurting anyone else feelings). Step 3 is being able to come to a compromise through conversation where both sides are happy. In todays world people are extremely quick to get upset when it's only a simple miscommunication.
Communication and expressing true feelings should have a bigger role in todays curriculum and education structure. The art of knowing how each person in the situation feels and being able to respond tactfully should be a class in its own!
