I think US foreign policy has remained the same for most of the existence of the US, it is just to be sure US corporations can get their profits, all administrations end up following the policies of their predecessors when it comes to foreign policy.
As for the media, this happens not only in the US it happens world wide, the media is owned by millionaires or billionaires and they will exert pressure on their editors to have news that are ok with their (the owners) interests. And here I am also including all of these internet news sources left, right or whatever they may be. So when you hear something try reading it from different sources, try to get different perspectives, you might get a better idea of what is going on, not the real picture, because everyone is lying, but at least one that is not so biased.
