What happened on May 23rd?
Bonnie and Clyde are killed (1934)
Bonnie and Clyde (Bonnie Elizabeth Parker and Clyde Chestnut Barrow are very famous American criminals. During the Great Depression, they traveled the central U.S. with their gang, robbing people and killing them when cornered or confronted.
Their preferred targets were small stores and rural gas stations, although they did rob some banks. They are believed to have killed at least nine police officers along with several citizens.
On this date in 1934, the duo met their demise. They were ambushed in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. They appeared in daylight in an automobile and a posse of police officers gunned them down.
Drew Carey is born (1958)
Drew Allison Carey was born in 1958 on this date. He is an American actor, comedian, sports executive and game show host. He served in the Marine Corps and had work in comedy clubs until his first big hit.
His first large role was for a show he produced called The Drew Carey Show. It premiered in 1995 and would have a run of 233 episodes over a 9 year span. It was a success, and Carey was earning $750,000 per episode in the final season.
He then hosted the show Whose Line Is It Anyway, an improv comedy show that would last for 220 episodes. He is currently the host of the game show The Price Is Right, previously and infamously hosted by Bob Barker.
Java programming language is released (1995)
Java is easily one of the most popular programming languages in the world. It is based on classes and objects and has few implementation dependencies. It also can be run on other platforms without recompilation, a huge plus.
Lead designer James Gosling, as well as Mike Sheridan and Patrick Naughton initiated the language project in June 1991. On this date in 1995, the first version of the language was released.
Today, many things use Java. The obvious is computers, and anything from scraping the web for data to visiting a simple website can be used (and is) with Java. Java also is a player in development of Android technology.
