Jackson Police Chief James Davis said two children were shot Thursday afternoon in a car in front of University Of Mississippi Medical Center.
Davis said someone in a dark vehicle "let the window down" and fired multiple shots into a darker gray car with a woman and two children inside. The shooting took place on State Street in front of UMMC.
Davis said both children, ages 1 and 3, were hit. The children are male and female. The woman driving grabbed the children and ran into UMMC for treatment. One child was shot in the leg and the other child was shot in the torso, Davis said. The children are in stable condition, he said.
UMMC sent an active shooter text alert at about 4:42 p.m. that said there was an "active shooter at Parking Garage B. This is not a drill." The alert was sent as a safety precaution when the shooting was first reported.
Ruth Cummins, a spokeswoman for UMMC, said the shooting did not happen on the campus and that the active shooter alert was no longer in effect. She said JPD and the U.S. Marshals are handling the investigation.
