I would think bitcoins were used mainly due to the fact that being decentralized it isn't something that can be taken back from the users once received easily. I tend to think it is less about being a bitcoin lover as it is ease of payment, stability in value and something that can be held onto securely for awhile while it gets processed.
Processed I just mean it will obviously be "tainted bitcoin" (term I have heard lol) but it can be shuffled pretty thoroughly using a bitcoin blender to maybe make the trail hard enough to follow while it is being spent.
