Ellen DeGeneres In Tears: Ashton Kutcher & Ripple Donate $4 Million to Wildlife Fund Live On TV

in #news6 years ago

Ashton Kutcher, star of various rom-coms and the smash hit comedy series Two and a Half Men, has made a $4 million dollar donation on behalf of Ripple to Ellen DeGeneres’ Wildlife Fund, set up to save mountain gorillas in Rwanda, live on her show.

Compared to most of his Hollywood peers, Ashton Kutcher has always been ahead of the curve when it comes technology. Kutcher was famously one of the very first stars to embrace Twitter, gaining millions of followers before most of his fellow actors had heard of it.

In recent years, Kutcher set up companies named Sound Ventures and A-Grade Investments with his friend Guy Oseary, a top talent manager with a client roster that includes U2 and Madonna. One of the companies that the pair have invested in is Ripple, now the world’s third most valuable cryptocurrency, with a market cap of $24 billion.

On Wednesday, Kutcher and Oseary turned up unscheduled on Ellen DeGeneres’ daytime chat show “Ellen”. Kutcher then began explaining to the audience why the pair were there:

“So, we were meeting with these folks and (Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen and CEO Brad Garlinghouse) were talking to us about the ethics of this company and this platform and how they actually really care about being an ethical company and giving a portion of this platform away to people that are doing good in the world,”

Kutcher then added:

“We (told Ripple), there’s this amazing human being and all they ever do is think about other people they can give to. Whether it’s in New Orleans, whether it’s in Montecito, whether it’s the people that come here, the people out there, you’re always thinking about everyone else and we wanted to show you that people are thinking about you.”

It was at that point that Kutcher announced that Ripple had chosen to donate $4 million to the Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund. Queue a genuine look of stunned disbelief on the face of Ellen, followed by floods of tears.

Then Kutcher said:

“Now, usually people come out with a big giant check and do the ‘big giant check thing’, but we can transfer it into Rwandan Francs right now right here, and all you need to do is push this button.”

Ellen didn’t need to be asked twice. She hit the button, and now has $4 million in her Wildlife Fund account, courtesy of Ripple. In a month where cryptocurrency has taken a bit of a bashing, this was the perfect feel-good story to hopefully get things back on track.
