Arrests of 79 Child Predators & Child Pornography Offenders in “Operation Safety Net”

Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino announced the arrest of 79 child predators and child pornography in "Operation Safety Net", a 9-month child protection initiative led by the Regional Task Force on Internet Crimes Against Children of New Jersey. Partner agencies targeted sex offenders using the Internet and social media, arrest procedures in all New Jersey counties and, for the first time, deploying a new van equipped as a mobile cybercriminals lab and new devices, to assist the execution of search warrants.

Those arrested in Operation Safety Net included numerous defendants, ranging in age from 14 to 75, who allegedly amassed and/or distributed large collections of child pornography, including a Trenton police officer, a swimming coach, a piano teacher, an IT professional from Morris County who allegedly had over 138,000 files of suspected child pornography (possibly over one million), a mechanic from Mercer County who allegedly had over 10,000 files of child porn, and three brothers in Cumberland County who allegedly had nearly 5,000 files of child pornography.

“The men we arrested lurked in the shadows of the internet and social media, looking for opportunities to sexually assault young children or to view such unspeakable assaults by sharing child pornography,” Porrino said in the statement. “We set up a wide safety net in this operation to snare these alleged predators and to protect children, which remains our highest priority.”

What this sting illustrates is that the problem of child sex abuse exists in all walks of life, including those tasked with stopping it. TFTP applauds the men and women who devoted the last nine months to Operation Safety Net and their work should serve as an example to the countless other departments who spend far more money and time going after people for possessing a plant or for their illegal window tint.

Arrest people for possessing a plant becomes one of the most asinine tasks a police officer can do. If these resources that were applied to the drug war were shifted over to stopping the exploitation of children, rest assured, these predators’ days would be numbered.
