Four elephants died instantly struck by a train in the State of Odisha, India. They were hit when the herd was crossing the tracks and hit by a speeding freight train. The area is known to be a common corridor passed by the elephants. Authority believes the elephants came from the direction of the captive center in Sambalpur, approximately 20 kilometers (km) from the scene. Although there has been no elephant movement in the area for the past three or four months, railway authorities have always been told to encourage their engineers to reduce speed in the segment, said representatives of local forestry authority Sushant Kumar, quoted by Asian Correspondent. In addition, they are also required to follow the standard rules including honking repeatedly on the segment, Kumar added. According to Hindustan Times, approximately 589 elephants have died in Odisha in the last 10 years. A total of 205 cases of them died unnaturally, including being hit by a train. Collision between train and elephant is not a strange thing in India that has a population of approximately 30 thousand head. In 2017, at least 60 elephants died due to similar incidents.
