The US government began a federal closure after the Senate failed to approve the new budget. It was not yet clear how the vote would go after midnight, as Republicans and Democrats split over a number of key issues. This means that many federal offices and agencies will freeze their work until Congress votes on a new budget by agreement between the two parties. Despite last-minute meetings between the two major parties, the government's financing project did not receive the required 60 votes needed to approve the budget until February 16. The last closure of the US government in 2013, and lasted 16 days.
Members of the House of Representatives voted 230 to 197 on Thursday night to extend government funding until next month, but failed to get Senate approval. In the event of continued closure, many vital services will continue to operate, including national security services, postage, air traffic control, inpatient medical services, emergency medicine, disaster assistance, prisons, taxation and electricity generation. National parks and archaeological sites are expected to be shut down and have provoked widespread public anger during the last closure. In the final hours before the vote, the president seemed pessimistic, saying in his Twitter account that "it does not look good to our great army or our safety and our security on the very dangerous southern border."
Trump had invited Democratic leader Chuck Schumer to the White House for recent talks but failed to find enough common ground.
