Police in Russia arrested three men last week, illegally selling 500,000 rubles (about $ 9 million) of bitcoin, the first offense against selling bitcoins in the country, Vedomosti reported. According to Forbes, the arrests in Kostroma, 260 miles northeast of Moscow, show the government's willingness to break money laundering, presenting a challenge for a country wishing to support the development of cryptoids.
Irina Volk, spokeswoman for the Ministry of the Interior, said that men are being charged with illegal banking. Their names have not been released.
The police found activity on bank accounts linked to 300 bank cards and sim cards used to store bitcoins. Prosecutors believe that money is transferred to family members' accounts.
