Today marked a historic even in the first March for Our Life event in Washington DC where an estimated 800,000 students, teachers, parents, and celebrities marched to end gun violence. However the march didn’t stop in DC, there were approximately 800 other sister matches from Boston to Los Angeles and around the world including London and Australia. Students observed 17 minutes of silence, a minutes for each life lost in the Parkland Florida shooting and many others carried signs or pictures honoring students from previous mass shooting that has happened. Many celebrities were at several of the marches today as well to show solidarity and support for the students and to help them raise their voice to be heard including 9 year old granddaughter of MLK Jr, Yolanda Renee King, other celebrities including George Clooney, Paul McCartney, Kim Kardashian West, Taylor Swift, and many others.
Students also raised their voice to lift up the black community and the fight for life that has been going on since Trayvon Martin was brutally murdered walking home from a local convenience store 5 years ago. Last week Parkland student David Hogg stood up and told us we needed to use our white privilege to make sure all people who have died in gun violence can be heard. That includes those men, women, and children of color that have died at the hands of police. This march is one that needed to happen; people need to now continue to fight for those evil people to actually be held accountable.
While many believe that guns are the problem, the problem is that there are some crazy ass evil people and cops that have an ego problem. Don’t get me wrong I fully support the march today and I applaud the student’s bravery and conviction to end the madness. However we have seen since parkland that it is not just guns, there has also been a knife attack that students were injured and killed with, Furthermore police that shoot and kill unarmed men such as the young family man that was just gunned down in his grandmothers back yard holding a cell phone, need to be held responsible to the fullest extent of the law. We also most definably have to take a long hard look at gun laws but government need to stop reversing laws, Mr. Trump that other presidents have passed just because you don’t like him. The bill that stopped people with mental illness from buying a gun was reversed by Mr. Trump and where do you think the almighty commander and chief was during this Million people coast to coast march was, Mar Lago Florida spending more tax payer money on yet another golf excursion but what more can we expect from the Cheeto?
