Getting the call last week about the job i had submitted my resume to i found myself reflecting on the past when i contracted out working in the prestigious Transplant ICU, however Neuro ICU is nothing to sneeze at either. Arriving to the 6th floor i was quickly greeted by the unit clerk and was introduced to Brett or Brad....or was his name Chip? Wasn't sure but automatically found a sense of reluctance on his part. It didn't matter because i was basking in the glow of Neuro.
After a rundown and "tour of the unit" i was side-lined by Anne, an older slim and very attractive woman who stood there studying me, while the man who was to conduct the interview quietly withdrew. Something odd and i don't think it ever had to do with the constant beep and alarms going off
Thinking pretty much besides all the awkwardness i was thinking constantly to myself, "what do I need to do to get their attention? Yes.. i know maths! Yes i worked here years ago! All those seemingly archaic formulas i learned in B-School. No, that will never apply here. I suppose being myself and recanting about my recent achievements in regards to teaching a woman how to speak again from having a major stroke. Then i felt the lime-light and a warm smile from Anne and an instant reply from "Brett".
"Well, we do our best in trying to wean our patients off of the ventilator and a Foley catheter" he said in a monotone voice.
To me something was odd and couldn't put my finger on it until later on this week, matter of fact today. I got the call and she said she "had already hired someone else" however my interview was impressive and will pass on my profile to the next Unit Charge Nurse. So in the end...its that ol' cliche.. "It's not what you know but who you know."
Bottom line, another job interview with 7E first thing in the morning. i suppose the first thing i'm going to say is, "Ha! According to my name YOU thought i was Black!?!?!"
