NeedleworkMonday: Two projects finished - and two on the needles / Zwei fertig, zwei auf den Nadeln [De/Eng]

in #needleworkmonday6 years ago (edited)

Done with stripes / Fertig geringelt

The leftover spirally socks are done. They're not really similar, but that's not to be avoided with leftovers and I like them anyway. The heel of the second sock is also ringed. It is a afterthought heel where I first made a wedge in the corners with a few short rows (explained here) and then the heel as a shortened round toe (explained here in German). I don't know the English name for that kind of toe, in German it's "Sternspitze" = star toe.

I'm taken in by this kind of sock now, and I'd like to keep going. But I don't have enough yarn left over... And then today I saw an pattern which I like very much: Socks where the heel is made with double knitting - that makes the heel more thick and longer lasting. It is already on my Wish List at Ravelry and will be tried out soon. I can do double knitting, but three-dimensional as a heel... that's intriguing!

Fjord-Cowl

My current mindless knitting project is a cowl, well rather a loop since it's meant to go twice around the neck. I've had the yarn a bit longer - I liked it because it is patterned in itself especially for such things. I cast on 220 stitches (might be one or two more or less, I didn't count that exactly) and then started knitting in the round. I'll do that until the yarn is almost used, then I fold it and sew the bottom edge and top edge together. This is explained well in this video (sorry, it's German), except that my yarn is in beige and brown colours.

Cowl.jpg

I've used up about a third and I guess the cowl won't have quite two hand widths. I know pattern making yarn for socks but in such thick yarn it was new to me. I'm using 4.5 mm needles but in retrospect I probably should have used 4 mm, the result is a bit too loose for me.

I can crochet, too: a scrubby / Mal was Gehäkeltes: Ein Spülschwamm

Quickly crocheted and practical. Started with a magic ring, the usual increases for flat crocheting in the round, then one row as an edge and on to the other side with decreases. Although I'm thinking about doing two halves and crocheting them together next time - I prefer increasing to decreasing, it's the same with knitting (that's why I make my socks toe-up).

Now I'm wondering: small loop so that you can pull it over your middle finger for better hold or long loop for better hanging it up for drying?

Estuary-Shawl/Tuch

It's going slow, I need peace and time for these patterns. If I manage three or four rows a day, I am already happy. On the picture you can distinguish between the two areas: one side the rows like waves and on the other side the area with the leafy motifs. This side will slowly get wider, I just started with the third repeat and there are four planned. Maybe five, I'm still undecided. Then it goes a half meter straight ahead and then the shawl gets narrower again. Yes, I still have a lot to do.

From now on there will be no more pictures of the shawl, it will be too tedious to block it to take a photo. I will inform you of my progress by telling you how much yarn I have already used. At the moment there are 20g (of approx. 160g) in the shawl, I am curious what I will manage per week.

Star toe is correct auf Englisch. Good job on the socks.

I noticed I forgot to include the links for the sock techniques + put them in.

All your projects look so pretty @muscara. Do you usually give away the socks you knitted or do you use them or sell them? I love the colors of this pair. The scrubby looks cute too. What yarn did you use? The pattern of the Fjord-Cowl is very nice. Love the brown hues and the lace design of the shawl is so delicate!

Most socks I keep, but some I give away. Fortunately most women in my family have the same shoe size :)

The scrubby yarn is a German one but I think I saw the yarn elsewhere. When I come accross it I will write it in a post. I bought it in red, green, white because I was thinking about christmas decoration for outside - with it being only poly they will stand the weather + time better.

Those socks are great! As is the shawl! And I love the design on the cowl. I look forward to seeing it finished.
Happy Needlework Monday!

Isn't the cowl great? As soon as I heard about that yarn I knew I had to knit something. Having a nice colorful pattern without work - absolutely fabulous!

It's possible to make socks by crochet! It's useful and wonderful. I like that color-match.

Yes, I saw a book about that. But most of my socks are mindless knitting - learning how to crochet a sock wouldn't be mindless at all ;)

Knitiful psychedelic socks! Left over yarns creates pretty blend...@muscara nice talent you know both how to knit and crochet, busy busy hands...

I learned knitting + crocheting at school when I was 8 or 9 years old and had "needlework" till I was about 13. I hated it - it was the worst. I restarted it decades later and now can't live without it ;)

Hahaha same with me, my mother made me a yellow pineapple crocheted dress and I detest wearing, just to obey her I just wore it once, then I exchange to my Auntie with her umbrella cut pants. I started to crochet when I was pregnant with my eldest. My mother laughed at me for that time I love to crochet till now...

Four lovely projects, I love the look of the socks, a great way to use up leftover yarn, and the cowl is very pretty. The shawl is beautiful!
I think two loops, one long, one short :) what is the pattern for the scrubby? I haven't come across this before.

I didn't write more about the scrubby cause I was too lazy to deal with UK/US crochet terms ;)
It's mostly done with treble crochets (UK). You start wit a magic ring, make 3 chain stitches as a faux first stitch followed with 11 tr and a slip stitch into the 3rd chain stitch at the end of the round. Now you do normal increases for crocheting flat in the round: first increase row every stitch doubled, 2nd row every 2nd stitch doubled etc., always with slip stitch at the end + 3 chain stitches at the beginning of a round. I did 3 increase rows.
Now you make one row of double crochets through the back loop and start decreasing in the same rhythm until you have 11 stitches again and pull them together to hide the hole.

Now asymmetry is in fashion, so your socks are just in trend :) I mean that they are different. look great! you have very difficult projects. and jacquard and shawl are very beautiful. it really takes time and effort. I wish you success!

I love love love handmade striped socks! I have a couple of pairs which were gifted to me and I never want to get rid of them, lol.

Your shawl is so delicate and such a pretty colour... with all the things I have patience for in needlecrafts, knitting is not one of them... I start projects but never finish them!
