Two and a Half Years Since I Learned to Sew

in #needleworkmonday7 years ago

It's been about two and a half years since I completed a basic sewing course. The course was run by a non profit community organisation for people who were willing to learn and who could also not afford the thousands of rands for sewing lessons elsewhere. Although the course lasted only two months, it covered all the basics of sewing from proper use of the machines, pattern making, cutting and assembly of a garment.

After learning all the basics it was easy to follow some of the many internet tutorials available for the more advanced sewing techniques. I've made so many things that I never imagined myself making like pants, tops, dresses and even bags.

Things I've Sewn

Girls Dresses

Learning to sew also opens up opportunities such as employment in the clothing and textile industry or starting your own business. Many people are in need of alterations or just need something made in a custom size. Over the past two years I've made and sold a few things.

Some Things I've Made to Sell

Cardigans

The most satisfying thing about sewing is seeing the end product and knowing that you've made that. Definitely makes all the time and effort that you put into it, worth it.

I love the girls dresses you made, especially the red one! My daughter would very happily take that off your hands! :) I can sew but don't really have the patience for clothes, so I'm always impressed when folks like you post such professional looking handmade clothing.

Wow! I just love the Kimonos! You have come far with your sewing, something to be proud of.

Thank you :-)

you're so creative
maybe you should make your own fashion factory one day :)
have a good day to you my friends

I doubt I'll open my open factory but thanks for the compliment 😊

great !! you are very beautifully obtained! I do not know how to sew

It's never too late to learn... Thanks for stopping by :-)

My mother was brilliant at sewing, she gave up on me eventually I have absolutely no desire to sew.

From what I see you have accomplished a great deal of knowledge, I love the cardigans @hoosain congratulations on your achievement.

Great job! I see you continue to spread the love of your craft and you are still posting a month after we talked last time. Very well! Good job!

Hello @hoosain! Thank you for joining us for #NeedleWorkMonday today! I love hearing stories of how people got started with their skill. Those pieces you made are all really lovely! I really like the kimonos and cardigans and especially the girl dresses. I am currently learning how to see with my 7 year old daughter. Unfortunately I didn’t take the opportunity to learn when I was younger from my mom. She’s been a seamstress for over 30 years but back then I thought it was boring and didn’t appreciate the skill or how I could benefit from it.

Now we just watch the videos and sew along with them. I’ll be posting about my daughter’s first project next week :)

I love the idea of #needleworkmonday and I actually learnt about it through your posts, so thank you for that :-). It's great that you're learning to sew with your daughter... The course I attended had women of all ages learning to sew including a couple of women who were already in their 60's... It's clearly never too late or too early to learn.

Thanks for stopping by @crosheille

Oh that’s Awesome! I’m so glad you learned about it through my posting! I had no idea it would take off this great when I first introduced it! It makes me happy knowing we have a community of crafters that have come together to share their work and fill up the blockchain with amazing creations!!

Oh yes!! You are absolutely right that it’s never too early or too late to learn a new skill!!! 😉

amazing what you can learn such a short time. very nice work. thanks for sharing.

Thanks for stopping by :-)

You are so talented! I used to sew many years ago, and recently my mother-in-law gave me her sewing machine and oodles of fabric. I have yet to do anything with it, I'm ashamed to say! I spend too much time on here! LOL!
