The offseason is in full swing. Trades and free agency are being pushed to the forefront of the basketball world’s conversations. But I feel as though one major topic of the season was overlooked. It’s overlooked every year (mainly for it’s complete irrelevance and stupidly large amounts of time it takes to work it all out). But it’s finally here so you can all relax.
Scrabble - The 2017 NBA Edition.
How it works:
It takes one person whose friends are all doing exams, and whose girlfriend has gone to travel Europe for eleven weeks, so he has nothing better to do than crunch some numbers.
This person will look at the 2017 rosters found on basketball-reference. They will use the team’s final roster of the season.
They will use this website that generates a score of words that would equate to the score in scrabble.
They will then find a total, and divide it by the total players on the roster (fifteen in every case bar one). From then, they will rank all 30 teams in their respected conferences and work out which sixteen teams make the playoffs.
The playoffs will follow NBA format. However much like the NBA, the benches shorten and star players have a more important role. Instead of using the entire roster, like the regular season.
The first round will consist of the best ten players from each team being used. The second round will include of the top nine players, the conference finals will reduce the playing list to only eight players, and the finals will consist of just seven players per team.
I’ve also worked out the end of season awards. This was done by the most valuable person in that category.
Sixth man was awarded to the most valuable player that was the sixth more valuable on their team. This lead to a number of players all on the same total. So I then awarded it to the most efficient (the player with the least letters in their name). This lead to a four man tie. Knowing that voters tend to favour the better record, the team with the best record ended up determining the award.
There may be some mistakes in here. Partly for the fact that it’s a long, repetitive process, and partly because I realised half way through that I could much more easily just copy and paste the names from basketball reference. The mistakes will not be changed however, as they replicate the shitty refereeing we witnessed all season. I saw it live, sry.
