Our Douglas-fir seeds finally sprouted!

in #nature8 years ago

Douglas fir isn't a true fir, but its own species altogether.

Latin name Pseudotsuga, the Douglas-firs are a class of tree that grows in coastal areas, but also in mountain ranges as well. Further inland, a subspecies called Rocky Mountain Douglas-fir populates the drier, more elevated locations. This tree is native to the west coast of Canada and the United States, but other species like Pseudotsuga Japonica and Pseudotsuga sinensis are found in east Asia as well.

A giant of the west coast, this tree can be planted in the east as well, and makes a great garden or forest tree that's unique, robust and very green year round. It's definitely a tree worth knowing and growing!
