Sea Turtle Spotting in Galibi

One of the most beautiful and unique areas in Suriname is the Galibi nature reserve, near the border with French Guiana.
Galibi is located at the mouth of the Marowine River in northeastern Suriname. In the area are two indigenous villages, Christiaankondre and Langamankondre (kondre means village in Sranantongo).

Both elongated indigenous villages are located along the banks of the Marowijne. In the villages you get a good impression of life in such a village. At the head of the village is a captain. Most inhabitants are fishermen and farmers. The farmers are mainly the women who grow cassava on the soil in the nearby jungle.

The actual Galibi nature reserve is located north of the villages and is accessible only by water. The nature reserve is about 4000 hectares and consists of forests and coastal areas.

In Galibi you can observe one of the most unique phenomena of Surinam nature: you have a great chance to meet huge sea turtles with your own eyes visiting the beaches of Galibi between February and the beginning of August to bury large numbers of eggs in the sand. In addition, in Galibi you can meet the native culture.

Although Galibi is also beautiful without sea turtles, most visitors arrive during the season when the sea turtles land. These unique sea creatures usually live under water and come from far away in Suriname to dry their eggs. Some come from the African or Brazilian coast to Galibi.

In the dark, the huge animals wander on the beach, where they move slightly. They dig a pit in which they place a huge amount of eggs (up to 150!). Once the tortoises have begun laying eggs, they get into a kind of trance.

A trip to Galibi sea turtles always takes place in the dark under the guidance of an experienced guide. You never have the guarantee that you will actually encounter sea turtles, but the chance is quite large between February and August.
