Elephants in Sri Lanka.

Elephants, I love them. I have seen them so many when I was In Sri Lanka. Even I used play with baby elephants when I was young. They are very intelligent animals. They have a very high conscious level. I believe   only second to dolphins. Also, it well known for their very good memory.

Elephants played and very important role in construction work in olden days, specifically in the construction. The history books in Sri Lanka claims that they where been tamed and used even 500 B.C. Elephants where been used mainly for constructions such as water reservoirs, temples, buildings etc. elephants where been used because of their intelligence, strength, and ability to climb high up mountains. Also, they were treated as symbol of luck and prosperity.   But today the story is different. Farmers look at them as an enemy because they come into the villages and destroy the crops. Sometimes one family or elephants can destroy a farmer’s six months’ worth of crops. There are only 5,000 or less animals left in Sri Lanka at present according to the surveys done by authorities.

Pictures here are the baby orphan elephants who have lost their parents and grandparents. Growing human population had invaded the elephant’s habitats. They have no choice other than invade villages for survival. Unfortunately, it is the end of their life once get targeted by a farmer with their loaded guns.

Sri Lanka Authorities trying their best to look after the orphans who lost their family, grandparents, and Parents, but it is not that easy task because of the huge amount of money required to feed them. One baby elephant requires gallons of milk per day and tons of vegetation. Biggest issue is once they got use to humans and their behaviour. They will never be able to go back to their habitats and join a natural family.

Adult recovered after gun shots

very little space left for elephants.

Not happy whats happening.

elephant is a nice creation of the nature. Unfortunately the species of elephant to extinct due to the human activities. They kill animals for tasks. Humans only think about their benefits. The time has come to make an attitudinal change and safeguard these animals.

Such beautiful pictures, I hope they get more land one day.

Unfortunately no. Land never grows. It is limited. It is taken over by humans . I have no answer to this.

upvoted followed.

Thanks

You are welcome.

Have you considered joining or starting a non-profit organization to acquire and maintain land for these majestic animals? Just a thought.

I haven't heard of any other than the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation. They are doing a good job but There are many elephants in other places who are very vulnerable. Once you said this it gave me a urge that we must do something. I am going to Sri Lanka next year 2017 January. I will make sure to visit some of the places where conflicts happens between farmers and elephants. Also I will make sure to put some pictures If I could.

You can get some info here if you are interested.
