Hello Steemians! Today we're going back to geography topics so let's get right into Mendenhall Ice Caves!
This breathtaking caves are situated on Mendenhall Glacier just 10 miles from downtown Juneau in Alaska. The glacier is about 12 miles long but the sad thing about it is that it's slowly melting away. Since year 1958 glacier has lost about two miles of its area. This process of shrinking will continue as global temperatures are rising so this natural wonder will be with us for a limited amount of time.
Mendenhall Glacier had two different names through history: Aak’wtaaksit (Glacier Behind the Little Lake) and Sitaantaagu (Glacier Behind the Town). Whole glacier is protected by law as part of the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area.
Although they look wonderful, the caves could often collapse so it's advised to only go in with a tour group. This wonderful landscape is really one of a kind but just one of the many on our beautiful planet.
