Not only does the Opuntia have dazzling blooms that range from pinks, oranges, reds, and yellows, the prevalant cacti boasts many healing properties, is wholy edible, and is an excellent plant for survival and bushcrafting.
As you may know, I am working on the pipeline down in New Mexico. It is a far cry from Montana, but my love for nature, the outdoors, and bushcraft is just as strong here as it was up north.
Just recently, the abundant Opuntia began to bloom. There were blooms everywhere, but this particular plant had vivid red and yellow blooms which reminded me of the sun and fire.
I took these shots which came out beautifully. I am inspired to get a tattoo of these flowers, as the ferocious spiny cactus produces beautiful and fragile blooms. It reminds me of myself, tough and enduring, but also beautiful, and sometimes fragile.
Bushcraft Properties
Food - the entire plant is edible, including the paddles! The fruit is luscious and is delicious, similar to the flavor of a raspberry. The fruit can be eaten fresh or made into jellies, teas, candies, and even wine! The paddles are seen in many Mexican dishes as a salad fixing. When preparing, all the spines MUST be removed! Rubbing the fruit and paddles on a coarse surface usually does the trick.
Medicine - Opuntia is known as a superfood as the juices contain anti-inflammatory, anti-clotting and anti-viral effects. The cactus hosts a plethora of vitamins and minerals. Juice and pulp are used to treat digestive issues, urinary tract infections, and can help heal wounds faster as a poultice.
The fruit juice has also been found to treat hangovers!
Craft - The hardy spines of the cactus can be used to make needles for sewing and makes a good toothpick. The variety of colors of the fruit makes a dye for clothing.
If you are in the desert and come across this plant, you are in luck! With so many excellent properties, the Opuntia could literally save your life.
For now, I will just admire this amazing cactus and take photos.
Great photos and commentary. Enjoyed the uses and Native American pic. I took some photos of closed cactus flowers at twilight yesterday in Florida and will go back today to see if they have opened.
Thanks! Some cactus blooms only open at night for the bats. Will be interesting to know if the ones you found are nocturnal or diurnal!
What fantastic colors! I love the sunburst pattern and how the blooms contrast with the rest of the surroundings. If I were a bug, I would be all over that bloom. :)
Its interesting that the Opuntia has several different flower outputs. Usually not this vibrant! I have never seen one with the sunburst effect. Usually they are just a solid color. What a treat!
Beautiful pictures!! I love any post that informs me about survival skills.
Thanks! I'm planning to do lots of posts about bushcraft and survivalism. Mostly herbalism and natural foods.
