I'm very fortunate, because I could see the Angel shark this summer when I was diving in Fuerteventura (Canary Island).
These Islands have become the last redoubt where we can find this strange species of shark.
I said strange because this shark looks like a stripe, with a flat body, very developed dorsal fins and his skin is completely mimicked with the sandy bottom where it lives.
This shark can measure up to 2 meters, oviparous, breeds every 2 years and can have between 7 to 25 calves. It's a quiet animal that only attacks when heavy divers disturb it.
Usually the first thing that you locate is his eyes because the rest of the body is buried in the sand.
Here I leave a video that we taxed in our dived.
It's fun because in Fuerteventura many tourists bathe casually on their beaches, not knowing that a few meters from your feet is full of Angel sharks. This animal can be found from shallow waters up to 150 meters.
Sadly, this animal is in the list of species as Critically Endangered, according to the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN). http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/39332/0
For this reason I wanted to make you know a project that is dedicated to safeguard the future of this species of shark:
ANGEL SHARK PROJECT, is a collaboration between three european Partners: The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK) and The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), that have created a dedicated project to safeguard the future of Critically Endangered angel sharks throughout their natural range.
