Yosemite's Horsetail Falls

Between February 12 to February 26, there is a natural phenomena that occurs in Yosemite National Park. Horsetail Falls is visible for about 10 minutes at sunset. The sight is caused by the reflection of the sun off of the flowing water fall and is only visible during this time because of the position of the sun.

The recommended area to view the spectacle is from Yosemite Valley Lodge to El Captian Crossover.

A few conditions must prevail for the natural phenomena to occur.

  1. Horsetail Fall must have water and the water fall must be flowing. The sunlight reflecting off the water is responsible for creating the effect.

  2. The sky must be clear to allow the light from the setting sun to reach the water fall.

As a kid my family used to camp at Yosemite quite a bit. I remember them talking about how in the "olden days" of the park they used to create the "fire falls" for the people each night that would stay at teh main lodge in the valley. Your images capture what in my mind i think i always imagined what that must have looked like. Though I'm glad for a whole host of reason they don't do it any longer, I must confess I think i would have liked to have seen it at least once. Your images sort of help capture it for me. Thank you. Great photos!

  • I think i'm going to follow along, I looked over your posts and i see you are actively posting on all kinds of goodies. I'll be seeing you around... I'll try not to be a pest.

You would never be considered a pest. Are you speaking of where they threw down burning wood off a cliff. I read something about it a few years ago. I heard it was quite a show. I appreciate you following. I try my best to post stories that are interesting.

Since you are just learning how to navigate steemit, you might consider joining steemthat and learn both simultaneously. They are very similar platforms and the purpose of steemthat is not to compete with steemit but work to increase your exposure. I post on steemthat also. Have a great day.

Yup, I seem to recall it was called the "FireFall" and as i recall you could still see where the granite wall was discolored from back when they did it. Thanks for the heads up around Steemthat - I'll need to take a peek.

Wow ,very good post ,i like it

I'm glad you enjoyed the post.
