Walk with me ... along the sea

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

From our driveway we can walk in either direction, south or north, and experience the awesomeness of one of these clean, unspoiled beaches.

There's Kidds Beach, Peter Pan Bay, Drakes Beach, and TO Strand. We've even had scenes from a movie shot on our favourite beach, Drakes Beach (Blue Crush 2- a surfing movie).

A bit further south is Splash Rock, a popular fishing spot with some spectacularly high splashes from the waves crashing onto the rocks. This is where I managed to get this short clip of humpback whales passing by!

The Indian Ocean is host to the sardine run, around June every year, when these little fish make their way up our coastline, followed by schools of dolphin, gamefish, humpback whales and thousands of seagulls, gannets, and other birds.

It is such a blessing to have all this literally in our back yard – lovely beaches and rocks, pathways along the seafront with unique flora and hardy dune plants, and the most amazing little animals who live in the bush and amongst the rocks, like the dassies (rock hyrax), blue and grey duiker (tiny buck weighing about 20kgs), vervet monkeys who love to sneak into the kitchen and steal food!

We have a whole family of tree dassies (tree hyrax) living in our garden, and most evenings we watch the group of about 8 running around in the treetops.

Below is the view from Drakes Beach across the bay to the lighthouse in Port Edward ... I am truly blessed.

All photos my own, except the tree hyrax - borrowed from a neighbour as ours are too skittish

My home is in Leisure Bay, a little piece of paradise on the East coast of South Africa in the southern part of KwaZulu-Natal, right on the border of the Eastern Cape.

awesome place you got there. did you plant the flowers/bushes in the backyard or is it naturally growing?

All natural growth here, many big trees including the Natal Mahogany and coral trees. We've tried growing veggies but the vervet monkeys eat and destroy everything, so we now have a tunnel for our veggies!

cool! those are quite rare nowadays. good that you found a place with naturally growing shrubs.

Looks like a lovely place to live. And you can see humpback whales there?! That's so cool. I would love to live somewhere I could go to so many beautiful beaches. Thanks for letting us walk with you. :)

It is lovely. Today is a perfect day, hot and sunny. And yes, those are humpback whales, we actually took a lunchbreak down at Splash Rock and I managed to capture them on my phone. Our village is buzzing this weekend as it's Easter plus school break, so all the holiday homes are occupied.

Thanks @ilovepoorpeople. Really cool!

One of these days my wife and I might make it to South Africa. So far, there are so many places to go see, I don't know if we'll have time to do all that she would like to do. It certainly looks like it would be well worth the trip if we ever did get down there.

The images are beautiful. It very much looks like a serene place to walk and enjoy the natural surroundings. Thanks for taking us on a tour. :)

I hope you guys get to come here, there are some really awesome places to visit. Just around here in southern KZN we have so much, besides our beautiful beaches. I recently posted about the world's smallest desert, the Red Desert, which is within walking distance of my school, and we have the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve with so many birds and small animals. There's Oribi Gorge and Lake Eland Reserve with giraffe, eland, waterbuck and more. And we're right on the border of the Eastern Cape, also known as the Wild Coast which is a beautiful part of the country.
Then there's the Garden Route, Cape Town, the lowveld, Kruger .... I could go on and on!

That's an amazing amount of things to see and do. I hope you all take the time to enjoy all of it, too. My wife is from Mexico, but hardly did any traveling. I think we've done more of it since we've been married than she did growing up there. Finances always has something to do with that, but some things she never did before we did it were close and cheap to get to.

Things become considered for the tourists, when really, they should be for the people who live there, too. Especially if it has something to do with their ancestors or heritage.

As I said, one of these days. She wants to get to Europe, back to Japan, continue to visit her family in Mexico and California, go wherever our sons end up living, and so forth. Not even sure if places I'd like to visit are on that list. :)

Looks fantastic, thank you for posting this, you took your time though. :-)

Cheek! I've been really busy but now that school's out for a week I have a bit of time. Battled for hours to post the video clip, but Brian sorted it out. I really wanted you to see it, as you're sea deprived! :) And I was hoping to get more beach photos, but didn't get round to it.
So we're into autumn and it's so hot and sunny. How's the Polish spring, still snowing?

no snow any more, it is 15c and the sun is coming out to play now. :-)

Wow. That was a beautiful post. Sorry it's past the vote on date. I will happily vote on your most recent one to make up for missing this one. If you do any more walk with me post let me know and if they are like this one I will certainly resteem them. Amazing work.

Why thank you @mudcat36, I was encouraged by @deliberator to show pictures of where I live, and although it took a while I eventually got it together. I must get my butt into gear to write, have some interesting ones I'd like to share. Thanks for the great compliment!
