where do these flies come from?

It often seems that fruit flies come out of nowhere. Even if I keep all my windows and doors closed, they can still find a little gap to enter. They are so small that they almost can not be kept out. Fruit that begins to overripe is fermenting and produces a light form of alcohol. Fruit flies love it and it attracts them. Unaffected sound fresh fruit is no problem at all. Fruit that has been cut or damaged. There they come in large quantities.

The scientific name for these irritating insects is Drosphila melanogaster. They smell decaying fruit from afar and end up there. They do not come from the inside of the fruit, but they come from the outside as soon as fruit begins to overripe.

A plague of fruit flies has arisen. A female lays between 400 and 900 eggs on decaying fruit, vegetables, sour milk, chicken feed and the like. All decaying fruit is not the cause of fruit flies. Within 8 to 11 days the eggs have become an adult fruit fly.
You can also bring fruit flies from your greengrocer or store where you buy your fruit. By the way, you know that fruit flies also lay eggs on dirty mops, jokes, sponges and on dirty drains and pits.

What can you do against the inconvenience of fruit flies?

  • Keep fruit and vegetables as long as possible in the refrigerator
  • Do not let fruit and vegetables get overripe
  • Make sure that trash cans and containers close properly
  • Do not leave any alcohol residues
  • Clean up soda caps every night
  • Do not leave any dairy products
  • Clean up dirty dishes immediately

Fruit flies have an exceptionally fast reproduction. From egg to adult specimen takes place in 8 to 11 days. This means that an overripe tomato that is not noticed for more than a week can produce a considerable amount of fruit flies.

They are insects with a good perseverance. They do not necessarily need fruit to be able to reproduce. Moist dishcloths, sponges and mops with a certain acidity through fermentation are sufficient for fruit flies to lay eggs.

Take the overripe, fruit fly attracting, piece of fruit, lay it in a small box and cover with hunny, the flies will stick to it and then you can throw them all away 👌🏼

Thank you for the information! I'm not sure how I'll deal with that as it seems like they can be everywhere. Very gross!!!

I don't have any tips as I try to do all that you listed already :) I'm happy that I'm doing it right but I still get a fruit fly from time to time.
