The Hamptons (The Hamptons in English) is an area located in the east sector of Long Island in the state of New York in the United States. The area is famous for being a vacation spot for wealthier Americans: a country place for millionaires, a place where wealthy families from New York City can spend the summer and weekends by the beach. Paris Hilton, Jennifer Lopez, among many others, have a house there. The Rockefeller, Vanderbilt and Carnegie families had their luxurious mansions in the Long Island area. The bay called East Egg that is shown in the movie The Great Gatsby is indicated in the Hamptons, although in fact the name is fictional.
The East Hampton area ("East Hampton") is considered the most expensive and exclusive area where the wealthiest live. There are areas to play polo and where horse races are held as well as golf clubs. The owners of financial and steel industries can have their houses in that area. Jordan Belfort, the stockbroker of Wall Street, with a fortune of nearly 200 million dollars, had an 8 million dollar house in the Hamptons.
In 2016, according to Business Insider, the area with the ZIP Code 11962 comprising Sagaponack, in Southampton, was the most expensive area in the United States, with an average value of $ 8.5 million dollars.
Despite the popular notion that the Hamptons is a wealthy, high-income community, in some areas of the Hamptons there are also people of lower economic class, who over time have had to move there because of of the high cost of living in the area. Even in the supposedly opulent East Hampton, there are immigrant workers from developing countries, who move there to have some work opportunity and take advantage of the conjuncture of the growing construction industry created by the demand of large mansions.
