I am fascinated by species that seem as if they were from another planet. It is estimated that there are about 270,000,000 million species on the planet and we only know 20% of them thanks to information from our schools or nowadays from social networks. The animal we will look at today is an insect that is endemic to Venezuela. It is a moth called the poodle because it is very hairy. The name was chosen due to how hairy the poodle breed of dogs is. Come with me to learn a little about this fascinating animal.
The poodle moth or also known as poodle moth is an endemic species of Venezuela and is located in the south of the Caribbean country in one of its most beautiful and world renown parks - Canaima Park, where you can find the oldest geological formations in the world and where hundreds of scientists travel to study its soil.
The discovery of this peculiar moth took place in 2009 when the biologist Arthur Anker was visiting and found the new species. He baptised it with the name of moth poodle due to its similarity with the canine race in terms of hair.
In the park, there are some plateaus or mountains with flat tops called tepuyes which contain endemic species even from the same mountain. There are many of these mountains that are totally virgin and have not been explored and some can never be visited out of respect for the aborigines who attribute to the mountains divine names or protective gods as part of their traditions.
The moth has a fine white, long and curly coat, which when touched seems very spongy. Its wings are also covered with hair, but in less quantity. It also has 2 large, golden-brown antennas with an appearance which resembles human eyelashes.
There are very few studies on this species which at times has been claimed on social networks to be non-existent or compared to a species called Diaphora mendica, a moth of European origin. Nevertheless, given the difference in the climatic conditions in which the poodle moth lives, it must be considered another species, distinct from the diaphora mendica with which it probably has little relationship. For now, we will have to wait for new studies that indicate exactly what relationship our moth has with other species.
The tropical rainforests in South America have unique species, but due to the immensity of the Amazon jungle adding to the fact that it is almost impenetrable little is known of the species that live within it. The sad thing is that many companies engaged in illegal mining and forestry industry have left parts of the jungle destroyed and although the jungle is very large, the effects have begun to be noticed.
There are thousands of species that have changed their places and other thousands have died, and other thousands are stolen to trade illegally in the exotic pet market. It is really terrifying that so much evil is concentrated in places of such natural beauty, but unfortunately for some humans, how beautiful a thing may be does not carry the same importance as the money that can be made from exploiting it.
Hopefully the poodle moth can survive as well as other species to admire its beauty whether in videos or photographs.
