Amazing nature #31 -The milk frog

in #nature6 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemit family!

In nature, there are so many species that the normal time of life of a human being makes it impossible to study them completely, to this we have to add the different species that we do not know, but they are there in the heart of some jungle. The Amazon jungle offers a considerable amount of species in its different soils, although many are unknown because only part of the jungle can be accessed, it is in the central parts where it is estimated that there are even species that have never been seen. Under this premise, the animal kingdom will never cease to surprise us, and as species are always being discovered, today it is the turn of a beautiful and particular amphibian called Rana de leche, but its scientific name is Trachycephalus resinifictrix.

The milk frog is a tree species native to South America, is known to have a peculiar reproduction system, the eggs once fertilized are placed in the custody of the male, who deceives another female to give him the same responsibility, only that these eggs never hatch and serve as food supplies for the tadpoles of the first truck.
The name of the Trachycephalus resinifictrix or milk frog was obtained by excreting a liquid very similar to the consistency of milk, this happens when it is stressed or lives in captivity, although it is a natural defense mechanism in its habitat. Like all frogs, they love insects, the small arthropods being their favorites.

Characteristics

Generally, frogs are nocturnal, the milk frog is small, in its full development can reach about 8 cm. Its dark brown color, with bands, light gray or white, with patches and dots, or light gray. Another common characteristic of frogs is their very granular or rough skin texture. Their feet are the same color. Due to their highly developed vocal sac, males are able to produce calls in very high tones.

Their reproduction does not have a fixed period as in other species, 2000 eggs are the number that the female can place and usually place them inside leaves where there is accumulated water or in any extra humid place of a tree. In just 24 hours the life of the tadpoles begins and their metamorphosis process is completed quickly in 3 weeks.

Habitat

As we mentioned at the beginning, the milk frog is native to the Amazon jungle and among the countries that are found to possess part of this vast vegetable region, the lung of the planet earth today and from which 99% of the plants that are used in the preparation of drugs and different drugs of the pharmaceutical sector are extracted. They are found in Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, French Guiana, and Venezuela. It is speculated that the first record of this species was reported in 1988 by Paolillo and McDiarmid in the Baria River in Venezuela.

Food

Like most batrachians, milk frogs are 100% insectivorous. They spend their entire lives devouring mainly tiny arthropods, they also eat worms, crickets, and cockroaches. And when they reach adulthood where they can measure up to 8 centimeters, they can devour dead mice. They have to be perennially close to water sources in order to survive and stay well hydrated.

Reproduction

This is one of the most interesting stages of this amphibian, the process of reproduction is variable depending on the species, each male initiates in different ways the phases of mating. The male is a fundamental piece, since he literally mates with the first female frog to which he assures the survival of his offspring by a second female with whom he mates, but to this he deceives her and the eggs never hatch because they serve as food for the tadpoles that the following day will begin their metamorphosis phase. his objective is that the last eggs serve as food for the tadpoles of the first litter.

As we could appreciate these are unique exotic animals and too interesting to leave out of this amazing nature, in some European countries milk frogs are adopted as pets and regret that their excreting liquid is poisonous even if no fatal cases are recorded.
