We continue with the exotic birds today is the turn of another South American bird that is in extreme danger of extinction due to its hunting to be sold as a pet. I'm talking about the yellow-headed parrot, a very common pet bird. Come with me to know some of its main characteristics.
Surely you have seen this parrot from pirate movies, illustrations or even in the home of a friend is the most common in the pet market so it is a parrot that is about to disappear thanks to these criminal practices.
Its scientific name is Alipiopsitta xanthops and is a bird that is found in large forests as in Brazil, Venezuela, and Bolivia, there is no subspecies known by which gives many privileges to this bird to be unique in its species, in some countries is prohibited its possession and marketing product of international agreements with organizations or protection of species in extinction.
Its average size is about 27 centimeters from its tail to the beak, and a maximum weight of 300 grams, there is no sexual dimorphism which makes it difficult for scientists to know if it is male or female..., Its characteristic head has a red strip and the back is yellow which is why in some countries they are called as red front and another yellow head, the rest of its beautiful plumage is a light green color, while its beak and legs are a gray tone, have a powerful legs and claws to climb in trees and a strong beak to break very hard seeds.
They are usually quite territorial so they often have disputes with their own species, for this reason, they are usually solitary, the rest of the time they occupy it to eat, climb and fly for food.
They are very sought after for commercialization because they have the ability to imitate human speech, which makes it really attractive, although they do not understand what they are saying, their ability to imitate is due to the fact that among themselves have different songs or ways of communicating so that when you get with another specimen learn quickly how to communicate, the same with humans, by repeating certain words the parrot assimilates it as a way of communicating.
As for their food are mainly herbivores, they feed on a variety of fruits, tree shoots, bark, seeds, nectar flowers on occasion or other feed on some insects, to detoxify from toxic chemicals some seeds eat mud as if it were a purgative.
Their reproduction is oviparous and as other similar species do not make their nests, they nest in holes that can be found in certain trees and in nests abandoned by other species, they lay from 3 to 4 eggs and their incubation period is 28 days maximum, after 6 weeks the chicks will be ready to face the world and look for food by their means.
Their average habitat life is at least 20 years, they live in semi-warm climates withstanding temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius. Although they prefer the rainy season in where they take advantage of taking long underwater baths.
The risk that this species is really high due to its commercialization and transfer to countries with temperate climates where its average life is less than 5 years which increases its demand to be sold as an exotic species. Some organizations have managed to create laws to prohibit its commercialization and tenure, reduce a little its danger of extinction, even so, there is an illegal trade network that continues to threaten this beautiful species.

Such pretty birds who are so social and love partying.
