I grew up on the other side of the Atlantic and know it well. For us it was quite warm water from the Gulf Stream in summer and up to October usually with varying sizes of waves. I moved later in life to the west coast and the Pacific. Now that was cold water with big waves! I've heard Portugal has some great beaches with few people...
